About an hour north of Tampa, Florida is a plain field, surrounded by a fence. It may look like ordinary land, but the fenced-in area is a burial lot for bodies donated in the name of science. The area is known as a body farm, an outdoor research facility where scientists study how a body decomposes in hopes to use that research to better solve crimes.Erin Kimmerle, an associate processor at the University of South Florida, is in charge of the body farm in Land O’ Lakes, Florida.  Kimmerle and her team study the donated bodies to learn more on how bodies break down, both under the sun and underground.Abigail Kenney's husband, who was killed in a car crash, was the first body to be buried at the farm. For her, the place brings her comfort.“I know I might not be the norm, but I have been given such comfort and how everything happened," Kenney says of the research farm.By donating his body, Kenney says she feels her husband, who was a school principal, is continuing to be an educator even after his death. Thanks to the donated bodies, Kimmerle and her team have found just how fast temperature and humidity speed up decomposition. What takes years in a dry air climate can take weeks in areas like Florida.Researchers learn a valuable lesson about scavengers--how drastically they move bodies, something that could be key to a criminal investigation."The vultures will completely turn a body 180 degrees, separate the arms and legs into a sort of spread position, Kimmerle explains."It might look like somebody was dumped there in a haphazard way or maybe staged even."Kimmerle says she discovered a heavy bird sitting on a rib cage can even break bones and collapse a chest cavity.“The number of injuries can speak to how heinous and atrocious the crime is considered to be, which will determine whether or not it becomes a death penalty case," Kimmerle says.Kimmerle’s team recently solved a murder case. By using what they learned about how bodies decompose, they created a facial reconstruction image. Someone was able to recognize the victim as a woman named Jane Weaver. It was later determined Weaver’s boyfriend had fatally shot her before dumping her body."I mean, our lab has done over 350 cases for law enforcement," Kimmerle says. The Florida body farm is one of eight around the country. Each farm studies different climates--from high in the arid climate of western Colorado to strong humid heat in Florida—in hopes of helping to solve crimes and bring families closure."We have the strong belief that for every missing person, there's a family missing them,” Kimmerle says. And for Kenney, it's comforting to know there's more than her husband's memory that is living on."He's had so much impact on other people beyond his death," she says. 2777

Access to city and county beaches will be limited for the Fourth of July weekend because of the statewide and local spike in COVID-19 cases. An order banning vehicular access to Nueces County bay and gulf beaches goes into effect Friday morning at 6 a.m. and ends at 6 a.m. July 7.The restrictions also include golf carts and all-terrain vehicles. What the order does not address is where the thousands of beach visitors expected this holiday weekend will be able to park. With beaches limited to pedestrians only, parking places will be at a premium because once they’re gone, you’re going to have to walk.Just a few weeks ago, local officials expected thousands of tourists flocking to Padre Island and packed beaches, similar to what we saw Memorial Day weekend.“You could have driven that beach and you weren’t going to find a space to get in on the beach,” said Director of Coastal Parks Scott Cross.Nueces County tried a similar plan over Easter weekend, with mixed results.“Easter weekend when we closed it down, it proved to us that the honor system is not going to work with these cables and barricades,” said Cross. This weekend, the county will keep vehicles out by blocking access roads with giant sand berms. While public parking near the beach is limited, local leaders aren’t worried.“We don’t expect traffic volumes to be where we thought they would be about two weeks ago,” said Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni.Even though Corpus Christi is a tourist destination, Zanoni believes now is not the time for out-of-town visitors.“We have a crisis going on here in our county; we’re one of the fastest-growing areas in terms of new COVID cases every day,” said Zanoni.City and county leaders worked closely to get beach orders out as early as possible to give potential visitors plenty of notice.“Hopefully people will hear the warnings, hear the advice,” said Zanoni. “If they do make it here it’s going to be a tough walk from anywhere on the island to the beach, I’m not sure that will be in their best interests.”“It’s really important that we do this for the safety of the people living here and the safety of people visiting here,” added Cross.KRIS' Greg Chandler first reported this story. 2221

A woman in southern Alberta is thankful she didn't swallow what was in a cup she was served at McDonald's as the woman was served a cleaning solution instead of a latte, the CBC reported. Sarah Douglas, who is due with her third child in two months, said all it took was a small sip to realize what she had was not a latte. "I immediately had to put my hazard lights on and pull over and spit it out and rinse my mouth out with ... water," Douglas told the CBC. "I opened up the lid of the coffee and out pours this pungent smell of chemical. It wasn't a latte at all."Douglas returned to the McDonald's location and the manager discovered that a cleaning solution was hooked up to the restaurant's coffee machine. "The supervisor went and got the bottle that was hooked up to it and brought it over to the counter, and I took a picture of it, so I knew what I was working with — what I had consumed so I could talk to 811 and poison control," Douglas told the CBC.  999

A woman -- barefoot and wearing what could be handcuffs -- repeatedly rang doorbells at a number of Texas homes before vanishing into the night. Now police in Montgomery County are trying to identify her and have released surveillance footage of her approaching a home. The grainy video, captured around 3:20 a.m. on Friday, shows a woman walking up to a house and ringing the doorbell. She's wearing a T-shirt, and appears to have some sort of shackle hanging from her right wrist."We were dead asleep in our beds. My husband was woken up by doorbell ring. It rang probably 20 to 30 times," one resident, who did not want to be named, told CNN affiliate KPRC. "He walked outside, no one was in sight. It's like she disappeared in thin air."KPRC reported that the same woman apparently visited at least five houses in the Sunrise Ranch neighborhood. 855

Almost two dozen people became trapped when a storm knocked over a large tree onto a detached garage, which collapsed. The victims were attending a child's birthday party, and had gone inside the garage when the storm started, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department."It literally sounded like a train coming down the tracks and I looked out the front door and I could see a funnel," said neighbor Dawn Redloff.Redloff describes the severe and sudden storm that hit her neighborhood in Pasadena Sunday afternoon, near Baltimore. Winds knocked down trees, power lines and blew out her front door and window. But nothing was as bad as her neighbor's home."It was heartbreaking," said Redloff. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said a large tree fell on a detached garage during a child’s birthday party, injuring 19 and requiring major rescues."The guys were unreal, cutting the building apart, getting people out of there," said Redloff. When crews arrived, they found six people still trapped inside, all were removed within 45 minutes.According to the county, 19 adults and two children were injured and taken to four area hospitals. The ages of the victims range from 2 to 78 years old. 1219
