SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Unified School District and School Board President Kevin Beiser are holding a news conference Wednesday to discuss student safety in light of the Parkland shootings.The school officials will explain the district's plan to address the nationwide student-led walkout to protest government inaction to curb gun violence. President Beiser will also discuss a resolution he brought forth at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting demanding action from state and federal officials to reduce access to certain firearms. During the news conference, officials asked lawmakers in Sacramento to implement a 10 percent tax on firearms in California to help fund school safety programs. Watch the news conference in the player below:  785

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Tierrasanta woman whose toddler died after being discovered in a car was arrested Thursday, San Diego Police said. Police said they waited this long to make the arrest to build evidence for a trial.Twenty-month-old Scarlett was found unresponsive outside the home at 10304 Leary St. on Aug. 5. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child but were unsuccessful. Police said the girl’s mother, Pricilla Marquez Harris, called them at 12:45 p.m. that day to say she could not find her daughter. Harris later called back to say the girl was in her Nissan Altima and not breathing. Harris was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation the same day, officials confirmed to 10News.Harris is charged with child endangerment, inflicting great bodily injury on a child under the age of five years, and personal infliction likely to produce great bodily injury or the death of a child. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Ocean Beach Pier reopened Friday morning after unusually strong storms wreaked havoc on the landmark in January, according to the city. The pier's opening comes just in time for the typically busy Memorial Day Weekend. The pier was closed to the public in January after strong storms caused damage to more than 2,200 feet of guard rail, electric, water and sewer lines. The Ocean Beach pier is the second longest on the West Coast at 1,970 feet. It’s also the longest concrete pier in the world.
