You likely aren't planning to visit Chernobyl any time soon, but that doesn't have to mean you can't get a taste of it. A team of scientists from the UK and Ukraine have created a vodka distilled from rye grown in the exclusion zone near the site of Chernobyl's nuclear power plant. It's also made from water pulled from the area's aquifer. So, would you be insane to drink what they are calling 'Atomik' vodka? The makers say no, and that it’s perfectly safe to drink. The scientists, however, admit the grain starts out radioactive but claim the distillation process removes the dangerous isotopes. They even say they had a university lab run tests to ensure the vodka was safe to drink. They are hoping to release the vodka to the public in limited supply, where it will have to compete with liquors that were never radioactive. The Chernobyl Spirit Company says it will donate 75 percent of its profits to people who still live in the area. 956

You can find weights, and workouts at any gym. But for gymgoer Amanda Hall, she finds something else at her gym she can’t find anywhere else. At The Phoenix, Hall is a fitness coach. She found the gym four years ago after trying over and over to beat her addiction to alcohol. “Every time one of those things didn't work out, I just ended up feeling more and more alone,” she says. But not at The Phoenix, which serves as an active sober community for its members suffering from substance abuse. “Nobody really cared about like where I went to treatment, if I went to treatment, if I go to one program, if I don't go to another program,” she says. “The only thing that was important was that we all just wanted to come together and have fun.” Gym founder and executive director Scott Strode started The Phoenix after his own battle with addiction.“I found my way into a boxing gym, and there was something really special about getting in the ring for the first time and being in there with other guys that were in recovery,” Strode says. “There were a couple sober boxers there and they became my support network.”To attend, you only need to be sober for 48 hours. “It burned and from its own ashes it rose again, and that's the story of so many people that come to our program,” he says of the gym’s name. “So, the name’s a perfect fit.” Phoenix gyms are in 20 states across the country, and they’re free! “There are so many programs that if you don't have the right insurance or you don't have enough money to self-pay or whatever else, you can't get access to treatment,” Strode explains. “Phoenix, if you can open the door, you can be part of it.” That incentive made it easier for Andrew Brough to come to the gym’s Denver location four years ago, while battling his addiction to opioids. Now, as manager of the Denver Phoenix chapter, Brough helps others in the same position he was in. “There was a lot of people that, like, help me along my journey that allowed me to be in this position,” Brough says. “And now, I hope that I can do that for somebody else.” 2080

(CNN) -- A task force that looked into scores of horse deaths at California's Santa Anita Park found no animal cruelty or criminal activity, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said Thursday. The number of horses that were being euthanized or dying after accidents at the famed facility gained nationwide attention when officials briefly suspended racing in early March over concerns about the number of deaths."Horse racing has inherent risks but is a legally sanctioned sport in California," Lacey, who led the panel of prosecutors and investigators, said. "Greater precautions are needed to enhance safety and protect both horses and their riders."RELATED: 3-year-old horse euthanized after suffering injury at Del MarThe task force looked into the 56 deaths that occurred between July 1, 2018, and November 30, 2019, and "did not find evidence of criminal animal cruelty or unlawful conduct relating to the equine fatalities."The task force, formed in March, had recommendations for post-death investigations, identifying preexisting conditions, track maintenance and enforcement. It proposed an annual fatality report, facility investigations, enhanced penalties for violations, and establishment of a tip line to encourage reporting of suspected animal abuse.CNN reached out to Santa Anita Park and to the California Horse Racing Board for comment but didn't get an immediate reply.RELATED: Del Mar Thoroughbred Club upgrades horse safety for 2019 racing seasonWhen Santa Anita reopened for racing in late March there were numerous changes: Trainers had to apply two days in advance before working out a horse; jockeys had to replace whips with softer "cushion crops" and restrictions on steroids, anti-inflammation drugs and race-day medications were instituted. The task force report says improved safety policies had "reduced the number of fatal racing and training incidents."The report shows the 49 deaths in the fiscal year (July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019) were higher than the previous fiscal year but lower than the two years before then."Since 2009, the national average for catastrophic racing breakdowns has declined almost 20 percent," the report says. The number of deaths listed in the report differs from those in recent media stories because the panel looked at a longer period of time. It included 49 deaths from the fiscal year 2018-2019 and seven since then. It also includes two horses that were not racers. 2452

A Girl Scout leader in Beaverton, Oregon was at the right place at the right time.Diane Bauer said she was at a Fred Meyer store on Wednesday when her teenage daughter Charlotte noticed a mother in distress at few aisles over.Bauer said her daughter was pointing to a baby a mother was holding – and realized the 5-week-old infant was not breathing. That's when the CPR-certified Girl Scout leader dropped everything and ran over to help.Bauer said she took the baby, told the cashier to call 911, and gave the newborn CPR.“The only room that was available was the little check writing stand,” said Bauer. “Those breaths started to go in and I continued until he came to, and in the meantime the mom was calling 911.”Soon, Bauer said she felt the baby's little heartbeat. After a few more breaths, the baby was alert and breathing on his own again.“Had the mom hold his hand, stroked his face and he kind of turned and nuzzled towards her like he was hungry,” said Bauer.Bauer said she and her daughter stayed until paramedics arrived. She credits her daughter for recognizing that the baby had stopped breathing.Bauer said she had just finished the CPR recertification at her job last month. 1204
