SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For comic, movie, and science-fiction fanatics, getting to Comic-Con is a dream come true.For one San Diego military family, it was extra special because experiencing it as a family was never guaranteed. "I actually brought Mason and Annabelle when he was on deployment to Syria, and he was kind of bummed he wasn't coming," said Lindsey Stacy, referring to her husband Kenton.It was on that deployment when Kenton, a Navy EOD Tech, was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was given just a two percent chance of survival but ultimately overcame the odds. "He's just made so many miraculous recoveries, and I'm praying there's more to come," said Lindsey.While Kenton's story has inspired thousands around the world, few know of his love for all things cartoons and superheroes. Their firstborn Logan was named after X-Men's Wolverine. "I always said he's this big tough guy but he's like a comic book and Star Wars nerd underneath!"So Lindsey put out the call for help to bring Kenton to Comic-Con."People were just so willing to help make this dream come true for Kenton," she said. Both Comic-Con International and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund stepped up to provide the family and Kenton's caregivers with four-day badges. The convention says it's dedicated to serving people of all abilities; providing a rest area, loaning out wheelchairs, and providing volunteer sign language interpreters for deaf guests. "Things are different now, and we can't be out as long, and we just tailor it to his needs, but we're just so happy to be here and have him home with us and be able to actually just reintegrate our lives back together again," said Lindsey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dreams of a degree take a backseat when you’re trying to find a safe place to sleep every night. As part of 10News’ Facing It Together initiative, we’re sharing a glimpse into life for homeless students and what’s being done to help them. “I’ve got to finish, that’s why I keep coming, I’ve got to finish,” said Brandon, a San Diego native who only wanted to be identified by his first name. Brandon started taking classes at City College three years ago in hopes of becoming a psychologist. “I love City, I love City, I feel so safe here and welcome here, I always have.” Six years sober, Brandon overcame a meth and heroin addiction. But he's been in and out of homelessness for several years. Complete Coverage: Facing It Together“Education will help me get out of this homeless situation, education will help my family, my kids included, get out of poverty.” Brandon spends more hours getting to and from school than inside the actual classroom. Living in Escondido, it's a two-hour bus commute each way. He and his dog are currently living in a shed with a bed made out of recycled materials. “I would love to have my own pad, that I can actually take a shower and wash dishes in a sink. Hot water, it’s been a while.” After surviving a suicide attempt in 2003, Brandon wants to help others struggling. And there are many. A 2018 study found 9 percent of university students were homeless in the last year. The figure was 12 percent for community college students. Stephanie Hernandez and her husband, both Palomar College students, became homeless after their landlord raised the rent. They spent a year and a half living in their car. “The biggest struggle was going to sleep at night and not knowing if you’d get woken up by the cops,” Hernandez said. “Having no job, having nothing, this being your home with no gas, and being stuck somewhere…it’s heart-shattering.” Hernandez was ready to quit until she confided in school employees, who told her about the campus food pantry. Palomar College helped Hernandez get a job and an emergency grant for a car expense. “I think we really addressed the food and nutrition part first; the homelessness thing is going to probably take a little longer.” Aiden Ely with Palomar College said the school has created a task force to look into safe overnight parking lots for students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded.But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For one local woman, President Trump's proposal for the death penalty for some drug dealers is sparking an emotional, internal debate."My daughter's character was so gracious.  She was beautiful inside and out," said Eva Faure.Her daughter, Eva Anderson was a trainer and aspiring journalist.  Six years ago, Anderson's life was cut short at the age of 23.  She was Faure's only child."The pain ... is an indescribable," said Faure.Faure says her daughter's opiate habit started when she tried her boyfriend's Oxycontin pills.  She says within 3 months, Eva was an addict. Around that time, Faure confronted Eva after she got sick, lost weight and her personality changed.  Eva revealed her addiction and agreed to enter rehab.  Faure says after nearly 2 years of being sober -- Eva's landlord found her dead from a methadone overdose in her La Jolla apartment.  While Faure still has questions about how the methadone got into her daughter, there's no questioning how she feels about those who traffic large amounts of opioids.     1114
