DENVER, Colo. – A group of entrepreneurs is launching a new app that directs users to Black-owned businesses.“The app is across all 50 states. We just got a notification today about a Black-owned business in Ireland,” said Mariam Kazadi, the co-founder of the BBLK app.The app uses GPS to find Black-owned businesses near you. Or you can search through businesses that allow you to order online. It is organized by the type of service.As communities push for racial justice, there has been growing momentum to support Black-owned businesses. Yelp saw searches for “Black-owned business” spike 6,000% between June and August.Companies rarely identify themselves through Google searches as being minority-owned, which can make it difficult for consumers to find them.“Black-owned businesses not only don’t get visibility, but they don’t get funding. So, we want to put the Black dollar back into the community so those economies and communities can grow,” Kazadi said.The BBLK app is free for users and businesses. DENVER, Colorado — The deadliest wildfire in California's history has left behind a path of unimaginable destruction, wiping out homes and killing at least 50 people. The Hamilton family had nine minutes to evacuate and barely escaped as flames raced toward their home. They lost everything in the fire just three weeks after moving all their belongings to Paradise, California.Steve Hamilton, his wife Delinda and their three kids moved from Colorado to California so he could take a job as a lead pastor. The family spent six years in Colorado where he worked for the Rocky Mountain Conference of Seventh-day Adventists."I know it was a really hard decision for him to leave but he felt like God was calling him out there," said Matt Moreland, a longtime friend and former coworker.Boxes were still packed when the fire destroyed the home where they had recently moved in. Pictures show the outline of a foundation and some of their belongings in the debris."They really just jumped in the car and drove away and Steve said when they were driving away their front yard was already on fire," said Moreland.He say the family didn't have insurance yet because they had just moved. Despite their loss, the family is focusing on helping others in their new community. "As soon as they went down the hill in Chico, Steve was calling people, asking for supplies to get things organized in order to start helping these people," said Moreland.Now friends are trying to help the family start over. They started a GoFundMe page to raise money for them as they continue their ministry work in California."They would never ask for help, they would just be the ones helping everyone else," said Lindsey Pratt, a friend who started the fundraising page. 1783

(KGTV and CNS) -- Authorities Sunday released the identities of the two men killed when a small plane crashed in rough terrain in East County.77-year-old David Alan Derby, a commercial pilot from Santee, and 36-year-old Ryan Michael Willis of San Diego, were found early Thursday morning after their plane didn’t return on schedule.The two took off from Gillespie Field Wednesday evening in a 1682G Champion 7KCAB certified aircraft. When the single-engine plane didn’t report back, a search ensued, leading investigators to find a possible crash site after observing a steep descent on radar.RELATED: Wreckage of missing plane with two people on board found in East CountyA helicopter was able to locate the plane near Descanso, roughly 17 miles northeast of Gillespie Field.Derby and Willis were both determined to have died in the crash.Derby held his pilot’s license since 2003, according to the FAA. DENVER – A Virginia politician police say is a well-known advocate for pedophilia was arrested Monday at Denver International Airport on a misdemeanor charge of harboring a minor after allegedly kidnapping a 12-year-old girl from Fresno, California earlier in the day. The victim was rescued and physically unharmed, police said Saturday.Nathan Daniel Larson, 40, was traveling with the girl from Fresno to Washington DC when he was arrested at DIA during a layover in Denver, police said.Although Larson was arrested on misdemeanor charges, he is facing felony charges in Fresno County for kidnapping, child abduction, soliciting child pornography from a minor and meeting a child for the intention of sex.Larson allegedly met his victim through social media in mid-October and coerced her into running away with him, police said. On Sunday, Larson flew to Fresno from Virginia and then traveled to the girl’s home.Around 2:00 a.m. Monday, police said Larson arrived at the victim’s Fresno home in a ride-share vehicle and persuaded her to sneak out of her house. Larson made her wear a long hair wig to alter her appearance. He also told her to act as though she was disabled and unable to speak to ensure she would not converse with anyone at the airport while making their way onto the airplane, according to a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office release.Witnesses told investigators that Larson was touching the victim inappropriately while seen with the girl at DIA. A Denver police officer assigned to the local FBI Task Force located Larson and arrested him. Agents rescued the girl, who was uninjured, and made arrangements to have her reunited with her family in Fresno, which she was later on Monday night.According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Larson is a white supremacist and a well-known advocate for pedophilia. In 2017, Larson ran for political office as an independent, seeking to become a member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing District 31. He went on to lose the race.In December 2008, while living in Boulder, Larson sent a detailed email to the U.S. Secret Service threatening to kill the President of the United States. At the time, George Bush was the outgoing president and Barack Obama was the incoming president. Larson pleaded guilty in federal court. In October 2009, he was sentenced to 16 months in a federal prison and wound up serving 14 months.Larson is scheduled to have a court hearing in Denver on December 24. DENVER – Time Magazine has named its first-ever "Kid of the Year" — 15-year-old Gitanjali Rao from Colorado.Gitanjali, who lives in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree, was chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 nominees for her "exceptional leadership" in finding solutions to societal problems such as cyberbullying and water contamination, according to a brief description of the selection process from Time."It was exciting. All my friends are really excited; they've been freaking out about it all day, as have I — as I should — and it's just such a surreal exciting, exciting experience," Gitanjali said over a Zoom call Thursday.Gitanjali said she was given the news of her most recent accomplishment by Academy Award-winning actor and UN humanitarian ambassador Angelia Jolie. She called the experience "surreal" and not something she would have ever imagined.And while she may be the first-ever Kid of the Year, it isn't the first accomplishment for the bright teenager.In 2018, when Gitanjali was 12 years old, she spoke with Scripps station KMGH in Denver after she was named America's Top Young Scientist for creating Thetys, a device that detects lead in water — an invention inspired by the water crisis in Flint, Mich."I think there's so much we can do with technology; we just have to apply it in the right way, and that's really what I wanted to start doing," Gitanjali said Thursday when asked about her motivation for helping others.
