It indicated the expanding and deepening exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, said KMT Deputy Secretary-General Chang Jung-Kong.     Taiwan had received and would witness a series of mainland delegations headed by senior officials at the provincial-level.     A delegation headed by Li Chongxi, deputy chief of the CPC's Sichuan provincial committee arrived in Taipei on Nov. 1 to discuss cooperation in trade and tourism.     Beijing Vice Mayor Ji Lin, who led a group of more than 250 members, arrived the island the next day and took part in a symposium on science and technology.     Xu Bodong, an expert on Taiwan affairs and also professor of the Beijing Union University, said the visit by the Jiangsu delegation was a continuity of trips made by Sichuan and Beijing.     "The trips reflect higher level development of cross-Strait ties as the exchanges at the local level involved more specific issues," he said. COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- According to the China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday, China and the United States recognize common interests in promoting the peaceful use of outer space and agree to enhance security in outer space.     The statement said the two sides believed that China-US cooperation on common global challenges would contribute to a more prosperous and secure world.     "China and the U.S. agree to discuss issues of strategic importance through such channels as the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the military-to-military exchanges," said the statement.     It said both leaders reaffirmed their commitment made on June 27, 1998 not to target at each other the strategic nuclear weapons under their respective control.     The two sides agreed to handle, through existing channels of consultations and dialogues, military security and maritime issues in keeping with norms of international law and on the basis of respecting each other's jurisdiction and interests, said the statement.     The statement was signed during President Obama' s first official visit to China between November 15 and 18.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Early and heavy snow storms in north China have killed 32 people, destroyed nearly 300,000 hectares of winter crops, and caused nearly 7 billion yuan (about one billion US dollars) of direct economic losses as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The death toll did not include those who died in snow-caused traffic accidents, the ministry said. Ten died in Hebei Province, 12 died in Henan Province, and others in provinces of Shanxi, Shandong and Shaanxi.     As of 2 p.m. Sunday, more than 9.6 million people were affectedly snow storms, and 166,000 people had been evacuated from their homes or stranded vehicles jammed on the roads.     More than 15,000 buildings collapsed, the ministry said.     Heavy snow storms began to fall on Monday in northern and central Chinese provinces, including Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hubei and Shaanxi, and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.     Beijing also experienced heavy snow, but no deaths have been reported so far.
