SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Foundation announced Tuesday a million donation to UC San Diego to help establish a school of public health.UCSD plans to match the gift and hopes to raise another million to construct a school of public health building pending approval by the University of California. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The first of more than a dozen truckloads of sand for an international sand-sculpting competition started arriving at the Broadway Pier and Pavilion in downtown San Diego Monday morning.A total of 15 trucks hauled and dumped 300 tons of specialized sand on the pier for the seventh annual US Sand Sculpting Challenge.Event organizers said top competitors from countries around the world, including the US, Russia, Australia, Italy and others, will attend the event over the Labor Day weekend from Friday, Aug. 31, to Monday, Sept. 3.When completed, sand sculptures will stretch nearly 1000 feet over San Diego Bay, organizers said.The first four truckloads of sand arrived between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, and subsequent loads will arrive in waves throughout the day, according to event organizers. 845

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will host the region's third "Free Ride Day" Tuesday, making all fixed-route bus and rail services free for everyone to use throughout San Diego County, ensuring residents are able to reach their polling place and exercise their right to vote."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS Board Chair and San Diego County Supervisor. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. Free transit rides all day long will help do just that."Free rides will be honored on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services including buses, the trolley, Sprinter and Coaster. MTS and NCTD services will operate on a normal weekday schedule.Passengers will not need a Compass Card or valid fare for either system, but face coverings will continue to be required on board all MTS and NCTD vehicles and at transit facilities.
