LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work.  1436

Like many boys his age, 12-year-old Caleb Anderson wants to be an astronaut when he grows up and has goals to be the first man to visit Mars. And having already been admitted to Georgia Tech, he could be on his way to the Red Planet sooner than you think.According to WXIA-TV and WSB-TV in Atlanta, Caleb's parents have known he was gifted since he was less than a year old. His mother, Claire Anderson, told WSB that he was beginning to mimic her words by the time he was three weeks old. Nine months later, WXIA reports that Caleb was able to use sign language to communicate over 250 words."I'm not really smart," Caleb told CBS News in October. "I just grasp information quickly. So, if I learn quicker, then I get ahead faster."WSB reports that Caleb is currently taking classes at both a local high school and at Chattahoochee Tech, a technical college in suburban Atlanta. In October, Caleb toured Georgia Tech and was later granted admission. He could begin attending classes at the revered Atlanta university as soon as next year.But Caleb has plans beyond college.“I think I am going to go to Mars, and do more school, I think, and try to get my master’s at Georgia Tech,” Caleb told WSB. “Then do an internship with Elon Musk, and then I’ll probably get my PhD at MIT. And then I think I’ll start working at either NASA. Or SpaceX.”Shortly after admission into Georgia Tech, WXIA reports that a representative for The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation — a charitable foundation started by comedian and TV host Steve Harvey — told Caleb that the actor would be paying for his three remaining semesters at Chattahoochee Tech.“He’s kind of always been this way, where you’ll ask these very deep, profound questions, and you don’t expect to see that from a three-year-old,” Caleb's father, Kobi Anderson, told WSB. “That’s kind of been our road, our journey.”“If you want to succeed, you have to do two things. Number one, you have to learn to fail,” Caleb told WSB. “That’s a really big part of winning, too.... And the second part is, you always try... LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) – An investigation was launched after at least one bullet struck a car traveling on state Route 94 in the Lemon Grove area.The California Highway Patrol said the incident was reported at around 3:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of SR-94, near College Avenue.According to CHP officials, the 63-year-old driver of a Cadillac CTS said he noticed a black or dark-colored sedan driving behind him for several miles prior to the gunfire.The Cadillac’s driver said the vehicle pulled up to his side and then shots were fired, shattering the driver’s side rear window.The vehicle continued on eastbound SR-94 as the Cadillac pulled over. ABC 10News learned the driver called 911 after the bullet came through the rear driver side window and lodged in the passenger side pillar.The driver was not injured.CHP shut down the right two lanes of the SR-94 from Lemon Grove to Federal Blvd for a few hours as part of their investigation. 956

LA POSTA RESERVATION, Calif. (KGTV) - A local Native American tribe is considering its legal options after one of their sacred sites was vandalized. At least 5 rocks in an area used by the La Posta Band of Mission Indians’ ancestors were spray painted over the weekend.“A lot people don’t understand they’re on the reservation here,” said Victor Estrada, Vice Chairmen of the La Posta Band of Mission Indians. La Posta Reservation is about 50 miles east of San Diego and was blanketed by snow last week prompting visitors to make the trek out to the high elevation to see it. “You can come out here and play in our snow, but don’t destroy our stuff,” said Estrada, “don’t spray paint your name and your family and say 'hey you were here.' We understand you were here, we know you were here.” Estrada says they found out who may have vandalized it through social media and that the tribe may prosecute, but would be open to the offenders cleaning it up themselves. Those claiming responsibility wrote a statement to 10News saying in part: “We are truly sorry as we were not aware that we were on sacred or tribal lands. LA MESA (CNS) - The La Mesa Police Department will resume parking regulation enforcement citywide starting the second week of November, officials announced Wednesday.La Mesa suspended the issuing of parking tickets on March 17 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Nov. 9, La Mesa police will issue written citations for vehicles parked in violation of posted street sweeping routes, metered parking restrictions, curb time limits, commercial zones and 72-hour parking limits.The city of San Diego temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16, limiting enforcement to holiday or Sunday regulations only.
