If Halloween is your excuse for endlessly indulging in candy (and of course it is), go slow on the black licorice.Just as it does each Halloween, the Food and Drug Administration has posted a reminder on its website urging folks to keep their black licorice consumption to a minimum.The reasoning? Too much of the old-fashioned favorite can cause health problems such as irregular heart rhythm, especially in people over 40.Black licorice contains a sweetening compound called glycyrrhizin, which can cause a drop in potassium levels. With low levels, some people might experience high blood pressure, swelling and even congestive heart failure, the FDA says.The good news is that potassium levels return to normal after you stop eating copious amounts of black licorice.So, here are some tips from the FDA:-- Don't eat too much of the stuff at one go.-- If you have been eating a lot of it, especially if you have irregular heart rhythm or muscle weakness, stop (and call your doctor). 994

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in coronavirus relief payments have been sent to people behind bars across the United States, and the IRS wants the money back. The federal tax agency is asking state officials to help claw back the cash it says was mistakenly sent. The legislation that authorized the payments during the pandemic doesn’t specifically exclude jail or prison inmates. An IRS spokesman says the agency is relying on the unrelated Social Security Act, which bans incarcerated people from receiving some types of benefit payments. Some groups say inmates need the money, especially if they've been recently released. 637

In a new effort to tackle the deadly opioid addiction crisis in the US, pharmacy giant CVS announced on Friday it will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions. This restriction will apply to patients who are new to pain therapy.The new pharmacy program will also limit the daily dosage of pain pills based on their strength and will require use of immediate-release formulations before extended release opioids -- intended for severe, long-term pain treatment -- are dispensed.The changes will roll out on February 1, 2018 and cover all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients.CVS, which manages medications for nearly 90 million plan members, is one of the largest pharmaceutical chains in the US, with approximately 9,600 CVS Pharmacy stores and more than 1,100 walk-in medical clinics."With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse," said Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Health.From 1999 to 2014, sales of prescription opioids in the US almost quadrupled, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, yet there has been no change in pain reported by Americans.CVS said its pharmacists will also counsel patients with opioid prescriptions about the risk of dependence and addiction based on CDC guidelines. These educational sessions will also emphasize the importance of keeping medications secure in the home and proper disposal of unused medication.To help patients wanting to follow these guidelines, the company will almost double the number of drug disposal units in its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program from 800 to 1,550 kiosks. This expansion will begin this fall with locations in Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and the District of Columbia.The company is also committing million to Community Health Centers that provide medication-assisted treatment and other addiction recovery services.The President's opioid commission says that about 142 Americans die every day from a drug overdose, equal to the death toll from the September 11 attacks every three weeks. Most of those overdoses are from opioids.Though there were over 30,000 fatal overdoses from opioid drugs in 2015, public health experts believe that for every fatal overdose, there are 30 non-fatal overdoses. IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) - Medical examiners identified the body found floating off-shore in Imperial Beach as 29-year-old Zabiullah Rahmani.Rahmani leaves behind a wife of nearly ten years and two 7-year-old twin daughters. Ramzia Rahmani tells 10News, "I can say it was horrible and it still is." Less than a week since she lost her husband and the feelings are still raw, "The fire is burning in my chest whenever I see my girls ask about their father. It'ss too hard to face their questions, it's hard to answer their questions about their dad."She tells 10News, her husband left Saturday night to hangout with friends down in Imperial Beach. She says he was planning to be home for midnight but the hours after turned into Monday, "The doorbell rang and I saw there was two police officers and I felt bad. I thought maybe something happened to my husband." Thinking something bad but never imagining it would end up being her worst nightmare, "It's hard for me to believe hes not with me anymore." Thankfully she has support from family members like Zabi's cousin, "I'll try my best to be like a father to Zabi's kids and treat them the same way I treat my kids." "It's an art."Korrey has been a professional auctioneer for more than 20 years, time he's spent solidifying his sound."There's not any two auctioneers that sound alike," said Korrey. A camera goes down Korrey's throat and gives doctors a look at his vocal chords in action."The strobe exam is an artificial form of slow motion that lets us look at the actual vocal folds as they produce sound," said Dr. David Opperman with Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. "We can pick up subtle abnormalities in the way the chords are moving, if there's a tension difference between the right and left side.  And it's really revolutionized what we do in the voice industry."Opperman said it's not just people like John who need to take care of their voice. Really it's anyone from teachers to customer service operators who does a lot of talking. He says staying germ-free, resting your voice for a time and rinsing your nose with salt water, can all help.From old-school voice training, to high-tech analysis, who knew it takes a combination of care you can't see from the stage, to keep Korrey's voice, and the auction, going strong. 2468
