SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County of San Diego has spent nearly million to support migrants after the federal government ended the Safe Release Program, according to county officials.Flights carrying between 120 to 135 people are now flying from Texas to San Diego to relieve the processing backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector in Texas. That sector is 200 percent over capacity, according to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison. So far, 10News has confirmed at least two flights have arrived in San Diego. It is not clear how many migrants, if any, will ultimately need county support. This latest round of migrants from Texas are first processed through Border Patrol before Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes over the processing. ICE told Team 10 custody is determined on a "case-by-case basis."Organizations like the San Diego County Rapid Response Network along with the County have stepped in since the end of the Safe Release Program. The program provided asylum seekers resources like transportation until their scheduled immigration court appearance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Highway Patrol is investigating following a crash involving a military Humvee Thursday night.The crash happened on eastbound Interstate 8 just west of Dunbar Lane. Five vehicles were involved in the crash.As a result of the incident, traffic was backed up on the interstate for miles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 10-day Sturgis motorcycle rally held in August led to more than 266,000 new coronavirus cases, according to a new study from San Diego State University.The study, released this week, says upwards of 460,000 people converged on Sturgis, a South Dakota city of 7,000, causing a bump in Coronavirus infections across the US. "Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 'super spreader,'" said the study, which did conclude that the rally was a super spreader event.Researchers from San Diego State's Center for Health Economics and Policy Study used anonymized cell phone data to track where attendees came from, then traced it back to their counties. They found that the counties that had the highest numbers of Sturgis attendees saw a 7% to 12% increase in coronavirus cases. The study also said that CDC data shows that cases in Meade County, South Dakota, where the rally is held, increased 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population a month after the event started. Descriptive evidence suggests these effects may be muted in states with stricter mitigation policies (i.e., restrictions on bar/restaurant openings, mask-wearing mandates)," the study says.In all, the study says that led to more than 266,000 new COVID-19 cases nationwide.The study says these cases accounted for an additional .2 billion in health costs, enough to pay each attendee ,000 not to have attended the rally.
