SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District says it has removed a letter from President Trump inserted into food baskets that, according to the district, downplays the importance of wearing a mask. The district says the letter “significantly diminishes the scientifically-backed importance of wearing a mask to protect against the transmission of COVID-19.”According to the district, the letter was placed into boxes of free groceries set to be distributed to 50 million families across the country.The district says President Trump’s letter recommends that Americans practice social distancing and “consider wearing a face covering in public.”“Science is clear: wearing a mask works to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” Superintendent Cindy Marten said. “Masks are required in California and on every San Diego Unified school campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The purple most restrictive tier for coronavirus guidelines goes into effect Saturday forcing many museums around San Diego County to close their doors once again."It really wasn't a surprise and when this all first started happening I think we realized that there wasn't going to be a magic date that everything was going to be better," James Haddan, Senior Director of Development and External Communications at the Museum of Us, said they've been anticipating the county's fall back into the purple tier."We made some hard choices initially, right away," Haddan said they made difficult cuts to staff at the beginning of the pandemic, hoping to sustain for the next two years."It has been extremely difficult for arts and cultural organizations throughout the city and Balboa Park would be no different," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said while many of the museums must close, there are still things to do at the park. The Japanese Friendship Garden, Spanish Village, and restaurants are open.In La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium is shifting too. They reopened in July and are creating as many exhibits as they can outside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego International Auto Show announced Wednesday that its 2020 lineup was cancelled.The show was set to take place from December 31 through January 3.“After careful and extensive consideration of the health risks and other factors resulting from COVID-19, the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County will be unable to hold and unfortunately must cancel the San Diego International Auto Show,” the New Car Dealers Association of San Diego County said.The next event is scheduled to take place from December 30, 2021 through January 2, 2022.“As much as we wanted to move forward with the show for all of those who eagerly anticipate it each year, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the pandemic has resulted in a situation where we are unable to hold the show. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The suspect of a Spring Valley murder nearly seven years has been arrested in New York.Waverly James, 49, was arrested in New York for the Dec. 6, 2012, murder of 52-year-old Stanford Roy Johnson, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies say they were called to a home in the 9000 block of Lemon St. on Dec. 6, 2012, for a welfare check. Deputies found the rear door open and discovered Johnson dead from multiple stab wounds.James was identified as a suspect and arrested on a warrant in New York. He will be extradited to San Diego and booked for murder. 599
