FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Heading to the airport? Pack your worries.  Every day, billions of germs are left all over Southwest Florida International Airport.Biology professor Cliff Renk from Florida Gulf Coast University and student Matt Glass joined us as we took a microscopic look at all the germs we encounter when we fly into and out of the airport. The professor swabbed all sorts of surfaces and using a monitor that counts the number of germs. A reading of 300 on the meter indicates a normal amount of bacteria.One elevator button registered 418. The handles on those luggage carts: a nasty 532.  Escalator handles were about the same but loaded with bacteria colonies. The buttons on the ATM machine in the main concourse were home to almost 80 different colonies of bacteria. But that's just the beginning. If you're flying, everyone needs to go through the security checkpoint.  And the bin you place your phone in -- which you hold to your face -- might be the same one the person before it put his shoes in following a visit to the bathroom. They could carry staph, which can cause pimples, boils and in some cases flesh-eating bacteria. There are about 1000-1500 TSA plastic bins that we place our stuff in when we go through security. We tested the first bin and its handles; it came in came below the normal level. The second tested at more than two times higher.  The third, well that's a different story. Even though the number was 611, Professor Renk says some stomach-churning germ colonies  - more than 300 - were lurking on board, including fecal bacteria and other bacteria generally found on the bottom of shoes. Reps from both the airport and the TSA tell us it's important we remember any public space is a breeding ground for germs and to bring and use hand sanitizer or wipes at all times.  Finally, they say to wash your hands frequently. And speaking of hands we did one last test on reporter Frank Cipolla's hands to show you what any one of us might be lugging around at any moment. Fentanyl is now the most commonly used drug involved in drug overdoses, according to a new government report. The latest numbers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics say that the rate of drug overdoses involving the synthetic opioid skyrocketed by about 113% each year from 2013 through 2016.The number of total drug overdoses jumped 54% each year between 2011 and 2016. In 2016, there were 63,632 drug overdose deaths.According to Wednesday's report, which analyzed death certificates for drug overdose deaths between 2011 and 2016, fentanyl was involved in nearly 29% of all overdose deaths in 2016. In 2011, fentanyl was involved in just 4% of all drug fatalities. At the time, oxycodone was the most commonly involved drug, representing 13% of all fatal drug overdoses.From 2012 to 2015, heroin became the most frequently involved drug in overdose deaths. In 2011, the number of fatal heroin overdoses was 4,571, or 11% of all drug fatalities. In 2016, that number more than tripled to 15,961 deaths, representing a quarter of all drug overdoses that year.The authors of the new study also found that most overdoses involved more than one drug. In 2016, 2 in 5 cocaine-related overdose deaths also involved fentanyl. Nearly one-third of fentanyl-related overdoses also involved heroin. Finding mental health resources in a small town can be a challenge, and in a time when more people are isolated inside their homes, that support is more important than ever before.“I’m 28 years old. I deal with depression. I have bipolar disorder, I have epilepsy, I’m schizophrenic, and I have multiple personalities,” said Sam, a father who meets with a group from the Mental Health Center in Hagerstown each week to help him get his symptoms under control.Sam is one of several adults struggling with mental health disorders who come from all over a rural Maryland county to heal as a group.“We are kind of a beacon of light for others who need help,” said Tamara Warfield, the Adult Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program manager.That help is offering a support system in places where people are geographically isolated, making their symptoms even tougher to deal with.“It’s hard getting the help that you need when you have mental health issues,” said Sam. “If it wasn’t for this group, I wouldn’t be out in the community. I would be home, not doing anything.”Finding connection is not only key to helping these men and women overcome their mental health symptoms, but it’s also key to overcoming the stigma they face every day—a stigma that’s often harsher in rural communities.“We want to be treated like everybody else, not like we’re stupid or special,” said Sam. “We just want to be treated like a regular person—to go out and communicate with people, make friends with people.”“We help folks that have cancer or any type of physical disorder, so why shouldn’t we reach out to those who have a mental illness? It’s no different,” said Warfield.Health care workers in smaller communities already deal with fewer resources. But for mental health treatment, it’s even tougher. There is a shortage of mental health care workers in rural communities, fewer transportation options to get to services, and more widespread poverty.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said these factors combined contribute to the suicide rate being nearly twice as high in the most rural counties compared to urban areas.“If you don’t have those basic needs like housing food, and finances, you’re not going to be able to care for your mental health. You’re just trying to survive to get to the next day,” said Warfield.Warfield and her team at the Mental Health Center are doing everything they can to fight that statistic by providing transportation to services and doing telehealth visits during the pandemic. However, there's always the fear they won’t be enough.“I’ve seen so many folks come in who have hit rock bottom,” said Warfield. “They haven’t had services in so long their symptoms are taking over and they can barely function.”To those Warfield does see, her help is not just life-saving, it’s life-starting.“I never finished school because of my mental health issues, but right now I’m working on getting my GED, so that I can be a better person for my kids," Sam said. "And that’s one of my big goals is being a better person for my kids, for my family, and they’re helping me with that. Florida is just one step away from living up to its nickname as “The Sunshine State."Florida Governor Rick Scott signed HB 1013 on Friday. The bill would let Florida remain on Daylight Saving Time year round.The "Sunshine Protection Act," would make Florida exempt from the twice-yearly time change.While the rest of the Eastern United States would set their clocks back in the fall, Florida wouldn’t, leaving it with more sunshine in the evening during the winter. Northwest Florida is currently in the Central time zone.The bill still has to be approved by Congress. 596
