SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents downtown are fighting against adding more low-income housing. They say it's only making the homeless problem worse. Merle Jones moved to this East Village high rise for the views and the lush lifestyle."It's categorized as a luxury apartment complex, and there's nothing really luxury about it at all right now," said Jones. Homeless people frequent the streets and sidewalks outside the property. "There was a knife fight that broke out and that was in the afternoon," said Jones. "My girlfriend she's not even comfortable walking outside alone so its an issue."In an effort to fight the deadly Hepatitis A outbreak, more shelters and housing solutions are popping up downtown. One of them is a 16-story high rise for low-income families on 14th and Commercial Streets. "I don’t believe that's a good idea," said Jones. "I think they need to clean up the area because when you have that type of housing, it attracts attention from other areas."The high rise is one of five Father Joe's projects to add about 2,500 affordable housing units. One-third of them would be downtown. More than 500 people signed an online petition to move more housing solutions to other parts of the county. "I think it would be a nice distribution of the concentration of it so that way it's not just one area and one area's problem," said Jones. For now, he's stuck paying high rent for a view he's not happy with. "I pay quite a bit, so I expect a certain level of lifestyle when I'm living here," said Jones. "When my lease is up, I do plan on moving towards the other end of downtown that’s a little safer and a lot cleaner."The building is set to open January 2021. 1830
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police arrested a woman last week for reportedly sex trafficking two young girls. According to police, the woman, identified as Desiree Morton, called officers on July 17 to report that she was a victim of domestic violence and that her boyfriend stole her vehicle. When officers responded to the unspecified location, they found Morton, along with two other girls police say appeared to be younger than 18 and had no identification cards. Police say the girls also had tattoos along their jaws. The two girls later told investigators they were 14 and 15-years-old. Officers arrested Morton after she reportedly admitted to prostituting the girls. The girls were taken into protective custody. 732
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed.In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city.The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups.The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts.The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County issued cease and desist orders to several businesses Monday after the county entered the state’s restrictive purple tier.According to the county, the orders were issued to several local restaurants, gyms, and yoga studios.The news came after Governor Gavin Newsom hit the brakes on economic activity, moving 28 more counties into the state’s most restrictive tier.The purple tier restricts capacity at retail businesses, closes gyms, and limits restaurants to outdoor-only service.Monday, Newsom forced 41 of California’s 58 counties to the purple tier. The studio is located in the backyard of a home on Oregon Street in North Park, one of San Diego's most walkable neighborhoods. "I was amazed it was going for that much money," said Joe Moreno, who lives nearby. "Does it have plumbing? I mean, does it have facilities?"The answer is yes. Property Management, which is renting the unit, said he expected to get asking price. After all, a prior tenant rented it for ,100 a month for two years. The asking price is about 0 per month less than a typical North Park studio.
