CARLSBAD (KGTV)-- Four years after the devastating wildfires in San Diego County, plants have grown back and neighbors rebuilt and recovered. The 2014 wildfires raged through neighborhoods, up over hills, turning at a moment's notice fueled by the Santa Ana winds. "It looked like a war zone of black smoke everywhere all over the place of all the roads blocked off," Homeowner Bob Payne said.He was at his relative's home when he got the call, and rushed back Carlsbad to see what he could do. He said he was lucky to have been out of town, otherwise he said he would've been on his driveway fighting the flames with a garden hose. His home was one of 65 structures that burned. Firefighters fought as 14 separate fires grew, eventually?covering 26,000 acres. At Bob's home, all that was left was a safe, full of photos of smiling children and their wedding memories. It took two and a half long years, to rebuild. He didn't want to leave their prime hilltop location, close to the beach and to town."It looks different, we changed our house some. We kept the same floor plan but we put in a couple perks in there which is nice," Bob said they had a pool put in and some exterior and interior designer changes.Nearby SDG&E did an update of their own, switching out wood poles for more durable metal ones."It burned up here and the and the fire department said it was 65-foot flames that came up and went to the attic of the house and burned it down," Bob said, explaining the fire flew up one of the poles and arched down to the roof of his home.Bob said he would never forget the generosity of the neighbors and complete strangers who gave everything from clothes, to food, to necessities to help his family through the disaster."I wish everybody a happy's Mother's Day on this day and count your blessings, and just enjoy your family and enjoy your health and everything that you have," saying he's thankful for the things that can't be touched by flames. 1992
CAPE YORK, Australia – Australian scientists say they’ve discovered a massive new coral reef that’s taller than the Empire State Building. The scientists were aboard a research vessel exploring the sea when they found the detached structure in the Great Barrier Reef last week, according to a press release from the Schmidt Ocean Institute. The institute says the “blade-like” reef is the first to be discovered in over 120 years. On Sunday, the institute’s team conducted a dive using an underwater robot to explore the new reef and learned that it's more than 500 meters high, the base is about 1.5 kilometers wide and it rises to its shallowest depth of only 40 meters below the sea surface. The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s.“This unexpected discovery affirms that we continue to find unknown structures and new species in our ocean,” said Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “The state of our knowledge about what’s in the ocean has long been so limited. Thanks to new technologies that work as our eyes, ears and hands in the deep ocean, we have the capacity to explore like never before. New oceanscapes are opening to us, revealing the ecosystems and diverse life forms that share the planet with us.”This isn’t the institute’s first big discovery of the year, though. In April, scientists also discovered the longest recorded sea creature–a 45-meter siphonophore in Ningaloo Canyon, in addition to up to 30 new species.“To find a new half-a-kilometer tall reef in the offshore Cape York area of the well-recognized Great Barrier Reef shows how mysterious the world is just beyond our coastline,” said Dr. Jyotika Virmani, executive director of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “This powerful combination of mapping data and underwater imagery will be used to understand this new reef and its role within the incredible Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.” 1957
CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - A border watch group says there are glaring holes along the border that can be plugged with the help of troops. The Department of Defense sent thousands of troops across the border to areas like the San Ysidro Port of Entry. “I don’t know all the intelligence, but it seems like (the troops) are all in the areas where the fence is pretty secure,” said Dan Russell with the Minutemen. The Minutemen is a citizen’s group dedicated to watching the border for illegal crossings. If they see any, they report them to border patrol. “Maybe they’re expecting thousands to show up in Tijuana or Tecate, but if they’re there in large numbers all they have to do is get on a bus, take the highway, drive an hour, and come over a wide open border,” Russell said.Russell says his group volunteers to watch the mile of the border just southwest of Campo. In that mile stretch, there are about five gaps along the border wall.“About every quarter mile, you’d want some eyes on the border,” he said. 1045
Buyers beware! Sometimes when you spot a good makeup deal, it's too good to be true. The Los Angeles Police Department says it confiscated counterfeit makeup that tested positive for high levels of bacteria and animal waste. The department seized 0,000 worth of bootleg cosmetics on Thursday after raiding 21 locations in Santee Alley, a Los Angeles fashion district, said LAPD Capt. Marc Reina."Those feces will just basically somehow get mixed into the product they're manufacturing in their garage or in their bathroom -- wherever they're manufacturing this stuff," Detective Rick Ishitani told?CNN affiliate KABC.One of the brands being knocked off was Kylie Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics.?Kim Kardashian West, Jenner's sister, took to Twitter to respond to the raid:"Counterfeit Kylie lip kits seized in LAPD raid test positive for feces. SO GROSS! Never buy counterfeit products!"Other prominent makeup brands that were faked included Urban Decay, MAC and NARS.The LAPD was tipped off by the brand-name companies, which received complaints from consumers who said they had rashes and bumps after using their products. The complainants had one thing in common: They bought the product in the Los Angeles fashion district. The packaging of the bogus products looks like the real deal, but the prices are way too low."If you're getting something that's 50% off, 75% off, it tells you that it's bad," Ishitani said.Police arrested the owners at six of the raided locations, and the other operations received cease-and-desist orders, according to CNN Affiliates KABC. 1576
CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Four wild mice collected during routine monitoring in the Campo area have tested positive for hantavirus, county health officials say.The mice, that were collected in open space in Campo, included two California mice, one deer mouse, and one brush mouse. The mice brought the total number of rodents that have tested positive for the virus so far this year around the county to 22.Health officials say people are unlikely to be exposed to the virus because rodents generally want to live and nest away from people. The county is also reminding residents that they should never sweep or vacuum up after rodents if they find them living in spaces like homes, sheds, or garages. Instead, people are encouraged to use “wet-cleaning” methods.People are exposed to hantavirus when the urine, feces, and saliva dries and is stirred into the air and inhaled. There is no cure or vaccine for the virus and it is potentially deadly, the county says.See tips from the county below on how to use wet-cleaning methods:Avoid Exposure to Hantavirus· Seal up all external holes in homes, garages and sheds larger than a dime to keep rodents from getting in.· Eliminate rodent infestations immediately.· Avoid rodent-infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent droppings and urine.· Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below.Use “Wet-cleaning” Methods to Prevent Inhaling the Virus· Do not sweep or vacuum infested areas.· Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes.· Use rubber gloves. Spray a 10 percent bleach solution or other disinfectants onto dead rodents, rodent droppings, nests, contaminated traps, and surrounding areas and let the disinfectant stand for at least 15 minutes before cleaning.· Clean with a sponge or a mop that has been soaked in disinfectant.· Place disinfected rodents and debris into two plastic bags, seal them and discard in the trash.· Wash gloves in a bleach solution, then soap and water, and dispose of them using the same double-bag method.· Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. 2157
