CLEVELAND — Ohio drivers have mixed reactions when commenting on Senate Bill 78, which is proposing a ban on smoking in vehicles when children ages six and younger are passengers.The measure sponsored by state Sen. Tina Maharath, D-Canal Winchester, calls for a 0 fine for first-time violators of the law and a fine of 0 plus 0 for each additional citation.Dr. Kristie Ross with Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland told WEWS she believes the proposed law makes a lot of sense since secondhand smoke exposure for children sets up plenty of potential health issues."When they're in a car and someone is smoking, it's a very concentrated exposure," Ross said."When you smoke there's particles that settle onto things and that can lead to exposure, and what we call thirdhand smoke."In children it impedes the way that their lungs grow and develop, the lung size when they reach adulthood."It can trigger asthma attacks in kids who are vulnerable to those, and makes kids more vulnerable to ear infections."Anna Busta said she supports the bill."I feel like the first offense fine is kind of high, with the prevalence of smoking, but I think it's great, especially for younger kids with disabilities," the Ohio driver said.But other drivers, like Sandra Buckner, believe the proposed law is too restrictive."I kind of think that we are inventing laws that take away our civil liberties and pretty soon we will live in a communist state where you are telling me what to do every second of every day," Buckner said.Ohio tried to pass a similar law in 2017.Senate Bill 78 has now been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.Several other states have already adopted vehicle smoking bans while children are in cars as passengers. 1764

CINCINNATI — Major Chris Ketteman says the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is doing its best to keep drugs out of the Justice Center after three overdoses in the last six months.“In the old days, we were worried about tobacco coming in. This is a much more serious problem,” said Ketteman, who’s in charge of Justice Center operations.The sheriff’s office says it is continuing to investigate the apparent overdose death of a 31-year-old Satwinder Singh in March. Singh was accused of driving while intoxicated, swerving onto a sidewalk and killing a 2-year-old boy in a stroller in January.Last November, two other inmates in custody at the Justice Center also overdosed. Deputies revived both inmates with Narcan and they survived.More than 30,000 people come through the Justice Center every year and deputies follow a very strict procedure to make sure inmates don’t bring drugs into the jail.Ketteman said the screening process inmates go through before entering the jail includes everything from a patdown to a strip search to a full-body X-ray scan and the use of narcotics K-9s."They only have to be right once,” Ketteman said. “We have to be right each and every time.”The problem is not unique to Hamilton County.“It’s something that every jail across Ohio, every jail across this country is facing,” Ketteman said,In August 2018, an inmate at the Ross Correctional Facility in Chillicothe, Ohio apparently overdosed from a mixture of heroin and fentanyl, sending 27 exposed staff members to the hospital.Last week, an inmate at a jail in a Cleveland suburb died after a suspected drug overdose.“When there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Sarah Manchak, criminology professor at the University of Cincinnati.Opioids have changed the game, Manchak said, pointing out that addicts need less of the substance to get high.“It’s much easier than trying to smuggle in some of the other drugs of the past where larger quantities are needed,” Manchak said.Ketteman said the trick to preventing smuggling is to constantly adapt.“We are doing everything we can within our power and within legal means to stop it,” Ketteman said. “Are we going to be 100 percent all the time? DAVIS COUNTY, Utah -- The Utah Department of Health on Sunday confirmed the first death as a result of coronavirus in the state.The patient was identified only as a male over the age of 60 from Davis County who was being treated at Lakeview Hospital. He had underlying medical conditions and was hospitalized two days prior to his death, health officials said.“Even though we knew some Utah residents would lose their lives to this illness it is heartbreaking to announce this first death.
