Hunter, held what he called a “security briefing” on Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar across from the U.S.S Midway Museum. Campa-Najjar is running against Duncan D. Hunter for his seat in the 50th Congressional District. Congressman Hunter and his wife Margaret are currently facing 60 federal charges of wire fraud and conspiracy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout.He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High school sports in San Diego County and across California will happen during the 2020-21 school year but on a modified schedule that will push the start for fall sports, such as football, to early winter.The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Monday released a schedule that shows the last date for Section and Regional/State Championships. Fall sports' championships, according to the schedule, shows end dates in March and April. The schedule shows spring sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, with championship end dates in May and June.CIF officials said that “most Section start dates will commence in December 2020 or January 2021.”In a press release posted on its website, the CIF San Diego Section said:The California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section (CIF-SDS) is excited to see the foundations of a plan to return high school athletics throughout the state of California for the 2020-2021 school year. Today’s announcement from the state office provides our section with the information necessary to finalize the calendars and schedules for all of our CIF regulated sports, while also acknowledging the importance of the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches by pushing the official start date back to align with the Roadmap to Recovery set by the state of California.Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all student athletes.In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport Specific Advisory Committees and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. Gavin Newsom announced reopening guidelines for schools across the state.Scripps Ranch High School head football coach Marlon Gardinera was one of many parents, coaches, and players who constantly checked the state CIF website Monday morning for any word on the fall sports season."We were waiting with bated breath,” Gardinera said.After learning there will be an opportunity for kids, including his high school senior and freshman sons, to play, Gardinera said, “It really gives us hope ... as opposed to not having a lot of it, really hard to do when you have two sons who are ready to get back out here.”The modified scheduling will force many student-athletes to choose between sports normally played successively.Gardinera told ABC 10News, “You have soccer and baseball ... [They’re] going to have to choose what sport they're going to want to play in that condensed season.”Otay Ranch High School football player Ethan Knight is excited that there is now a plan in place. "My birthday's in January, so it will be a good birthday present. I think it's great because it will be a new environment." Knight said he has used the months during the pandemic to train for the upcoming season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. ICE takes very seriously the safety and well-being of those in our care and will take all necessary steps in order to ensure the continued safety of both detainees and staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving back from a call in Jamul, two HVAC technicians act quickly to help a driver trapped in a smoking car. The accident happened on Campo Road."It looked like the truck got t-boned by a car and flipped on its side," one of the technicians told 10News.For Kyle Hester and Anthony Ramirez, it was a day they will never forget."Working and something crazy happened, you'll never forget it it’ll always be a story to tell," Ramirez said.Dashboard cameras installed in their work truck weeks ago caught the entire incident on camera."It all happened in a matter of seconds," said Ramirez.Hester and Ramirez pulled up to the crash before firefighters and paramedics were there. Hester grabbed the fire extinguisher from the back of their work truck to try to keep the car from catching fire. Ramirez told 10News, "I would consider Kyle a hero." Meanwhile, Hester said he doesn't consider himself a hero, just a person doing the right thing."I think there were other heroes there that day helping out," said Hester.10News has learned both drivers from the crash were able to get out of their vehicles safely. 1132
