SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the second time in just over one year, the drinking water at a University Heights-area school has tested positive for lead, the San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday.The lead was found during routine testing of Birney Elementary School’s drinking fountains, according to the Facilities Communications Manager.The fountains were shut off and parents were notified, the district said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. According to police, the suspect is a man in his 30s who got into an argument with employees after trying to use counterfeit money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members in the South Bay mourning the death of a beloved grandfather and foster parent from coronavirus.Enrique Gonzalez, 68, was doing everything right. He was staying at home. His family was shopping for him. A month ago, he got sick."Runny nose, body aches, fever," said his nephew, Fernando Gonzalez.Fernando says within a week, Gonzalez tested positive for COVID-19."As soon as he had trouble breathing and talking, we took him to the hospital," said Fernando.Doctors put him on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later, after suffering cardiac arrest, his condition deteriorated. A nurse helped his large family talk to him through Facetime calls."Told him jokes, playing music for him ... praying for him. Really tough not to be in the room," said Fernando.A week ago, Gonzalez passed away."Just devastating to everybody," said Fernando.Fernando says the family now grieving the loss of a hard-working man with the biggest of hearts. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning.In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916
