SAN DEIGO (KGTV) -- As the migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, local attorneys and shelters in Tijuana are monitoring their progress, in case the immigrants arrive at the Tijuana and San Diego border.The group Federal Defenders of San Diego worked illegal entry cases during the last caravan in April. Kara Hartzler is one of their attorneys, she says theirs already a daily backlog with immigration cases and this caravan will further overwhelm the system.Hartzler says many immigrants from April's caravan are still in the asylum process.  It's estimated the new caravan is 4,000 to 7,000 immigrants in size, roughly three times bigger than the one in April. In Tijuana, shelters are having meetings to prepare for the possibility of a large arrival. In a series of tweets Monday morning, President Trump called the latest caravan a "national emergency" and threatened to cut off aid to certain Central American countries, adding that he's already alerted Border Patrol and the military.  1038

SAN DIEGO — Medical workers from all over San Diego made their way into SDCCU Stadium Wednesday to pick up free Personal Protective Equipment for their small and medium sized practices.The workers got free hand sanitizer, N95 masks, surgical masks, gloves and gowns. "It's really hard to find in stores, online, it's all out, everywhere," said Juana Vasquez, medical assistant at La Mesa Family Medical Groups, who was picking up supplies.Volunteers from the San Diego County Medical Society, UCSD Medical School and the Mira Mesa High School football team handed drivers boxes of the gear in the stadium's parking lot. Medical organizations of 50 or fewer are eligible, and more than 500 of them registered for the event. Dr. Holly Yang, a hospice and palliative care specialist at Scripps and president of the San Diego County Medical Society, said larger hospital systems have been able to source the necessary PPE for its staff. For smaller operations, however, it has been a challenge."Everyone wants to take care of patients," Yang said. "We should not in this country have to be afraid for ourselves and our families. We should have the right equipment. It’s completely inexcusable that this far into the pandemic that that is not available and I’m so grateful that we are able to do this for our small practices."The items came available due to Gov. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency Sunday as nearly 200,000 people flee their homes amid wildfires. The Kincade Fire in Sonoma County has burned more than 30,000 acres as it threatens hundreds of structures. The blaze started Wednesday night and, as of Sunday afternoon, was only 10 percent contained. SAN DIEGO — Corinne Lam didn't waste anytime once she learned she wouldn't be allowed to cut hair indoors anymore.She spent Monday afternoon gathering tents, misters, and rugs to make it somewhat bearable to move Rancho Bernardo’s Salotto Salon’s operations into its parking lot."We were essentially ready to start operating tomorrow outdoors,” she said Tuesday.Governor Newsom on Monday ordered salons, gyms and malls to cease indoor operations to slow the increasing spread of Covid-19.Lam didn't think moving outside would be a problem. After all, the County of San Diego said businesses could shift operations outside under tents, canopies or sun shelters if the sides are not closed and there is sufficient air movement.Lam, who owns the salon with her husband, was planning to do just that until she learned the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.“The law - in the Business and Professions Code - states that all barbering and cosmetology services must be performed IN a licensed establishment,” said Cheri Gyuro, spokeswoman for the state Department of Consumer Affairs. “Therefore, these types of business in the required counties must be closed immediately.”It's a devastating blow to Salotto Salon and those like it across the county - because unlike last shutdown, they've exhausted all of their stimulus funds through the paycheck protection program.“We're not just hairstylists,” Lam said. “We are professionals and business owners and mothers, and all we want is to be able to do what we do.” 1540

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A distraught man driving a van stolen in Sorrento Valley led San Diego police and the California Highway Patrol on a lengthy chase Thursday that ended in Riverside County, authorities said.San Diego Police Department Officer Scott Lockwood said the white van was stolen from the 9400 block of Scranton Road about 10:45 a.m.SDPD officers pursued the stolen vehicle through Mira Mesa, and the CHP took over the chase when the driver got onto northbound Interstate 15. The suspect, who's in his 50s, was apprehended just south of Weirick Road in Corona at 11:54 a.m., according to the CHP."The suspect was suicidal and inflicted harm to himself, possibly with a sharp-edged knife or razor," CHP Officer Javier Muniz said.Muniz said the unidentified suspect was transported by ambulance to Inland Valley Hospital for treatment. 849
