That's what Marcel McClinton, 17, says he is asked a lot."I've got the right ideas and change is necessary to bring our city and push it further to success," he answers.McClinton is just days out of high school and turns 18 on July 5. The filing deadline for Houston's city council candidates is Aug. 30."I just barely make it," he said. Age is just a number to him."So I think that, you know, the mindset of 'you can only get involved, you only have a voice when you turn 18 when you can vote' is a lie, is a myth, it's not true," he said. "I always tell young folks who ask me this question that you can help campaigns and push your political ideas through a movement, right?"For McClinton, the movement he is most passionate about, is preventing gun violence. What do you do with your leftovers? For many Americans, it ends up in the trash; the average American wastes a pound a day of food per USDA figures. But an organization in Indiana is taking leftovers to fulfill a need in the community. The organization is called Cultivate, and it is based in South Bend, Indiana. Cultivate, a nonprofit organization, takes food left from event centers, convention centers and banquets. The leftovers are then repackaged and repurposed. “We get great food that’s been donated that’s made by really great chefs that had been going into the trash can,” Jim Conklin of Cultivate said. Food such as prime rib, lobster bisque and fresh vegetables sometimes make it to Cultivate's kitchen. The food then ends up in the stomachs of children, many of whom were not receiving meals outside of their school breakfasts and lunches. Principal of Madison Steam Academy Deb Martin said she has seen first-hand the effects of poverty in her school. Martin said that 93 percent of her students live in poverty. “When you have a limited amount of funds sometimes the first thing to go is your food source, especially if you have a larger family,” Martin said. In the past, Martin noticed that students came to school extra hungry on Monday mornings after going the weekend without being fed.“On Monday’s, our kids run to breakfast,” Martin said, “and when you have that, you know you have food deprived children.”On Fridays, the students are sent home with up to six prepackaged meals prepared by Cultivate. “We believe giving a child meals over the weekend will help their education,” Conklin said. “Which is truly the only way out of poverty.”Martin is thankful for the program. “It’s a unique way to take something that was going to be waste, and now make it into doing what it’s doing for our kids filling in those gaps, feeding those kids nutritious healthy meals that they may not get,” she said. 1931

Five days a week, the Denver-based non-profit group stocks up on food that will be thrown out, often times for pretty superficial reasons. “If it has dirt on it, if it has a little bruising: landfill,” says Arlan Prebld, executive director and founder of We Don’t Waste. Preblud started the non-profit a few years ago by recovering food rejected by restaurants and grocery stores and distributing it from the trunk of his car. Fast-forward to today, his team collects enough food to fill a massive distribution center in north Denver.“Last year, we put out 31 million servings,” Preblud says. “The collateral benefit of all that is all that food you see and that we deliver on a regular daily basis would end up in the landfill.” And a lot of food ends up in landfills across the country. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 133 billion pounds and 1 billion worth of food were wasted in 2010. Preblud adds that impact goes well beyond the economy and into the environment. “When you put food into a landfill, it generates CO2 equivalence," he says. "Methane gas destroying the atmosphere."In addition to emitting greenhouse gases, wasted food also wastes the resources it took to produce, package, sell and transport it. So, in theory, by picking up what would be food by the pallet-full and trucking it to those in need, We Don’t Waste is filling many needs. “It’s great that we have partners that care about these people as much as we do, because, as you know, must people don’t,” says Doyle Robinson of Sox Place, a drop-in center for homeless youth in Denver. We Don’t Waste delivers food to Sox Place a few times a week. Doyle, however, says much the gesture provides much more than meals. “It’s great to find people that care and they do this because they care,” he says. “There’s no money in this." 2003
