Amazon's go-it-alone delivery strategy has driven away one of its biggest partners. FedEx will end its ground delivery contract with Amazon. For years, Amazon has used FedEx's ground delivery service to help shuttle online orders to consumers. But Amazon is also rapidly bolstering its own delivery network, agitating established logistics businesses.FedEx announced Wednesday that it plans to let their ground ship contract expire at the end of the month. The company said in a statement that recent steps to bolster its delivery network have positioned the company "extraordinarily well" to "focus on the broader e-commerce market."FedEx also dumped Amazon from its air cargo services in June. The company said at the time it would continue serving online shoppers through its partnerships with other companies not named Amazon. FedEx noted Amazon accounted for less than 1.3% of its total revenue in 2018.Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.FedEx v. AmazonAmazon's obsession with speedier deliveries has overhauled the delivery landscape. Its aggressive plans to expand its internal shipping network threaten FedEx and UPS.Over the past couple of years, Amazon's moves are often met in lock step by FedEx: Amazon expanded its warehouse center, and FedEx debuted FedEx Fulfillment. Amazon announced single-day delivery, and FedEx said it would speed things up with seven-day shipping. Amazon began testing a delivery robot, and FedEx introduced the 1486
An American was possibly exposed to Ebola while recently providing medical assistance in Congo, according to a release from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. The person, who has not been identified, is headed to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for monitoring, the release states, adding the Nebraska Medical Center is home to one of the nation's few dedicated biocontainment units."This person may have been exposed to the virus but is not ill and is not contagious," said Ted Cieslak, infectious diseases specialist with Nebraska Medicine and associate professor of epidemiology in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. "Should any symptoms develop, the Nebraska Medicine/UNMC team is among the most qualified in the world to deal with them."The Democratic Republic of Congo is going through one of the deadliest Ebola outbreaks in history. The outbreak began August 1 and has left more than 300 people dead, with 545 confirmed cases recorded as of Saturday, according to the country's health ministry. Another 48 cases are considered probable. The World Health Organization said protests in Congo over election delays and a deteriorating security situation are interfering with their field teams' ability to carry out Ebola vaccinations in some areas. The American, the Nebraska release states, is not an official patient and is being taken privately to the medical center. Federal, state and county public health officials plan to monitor the person in a secure area not accessible by the public or any patients. Monitoring could take as long as two weeks, the release states. No updates will be given on the person's status during the monitoring period unless needed, the release also states. If it is necessary, though, the individual will be transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, where regular updates will be provided. This isn't the first time possible Ebola patients were treated at the Nebraska Medical Center. Nebraska Medicine treated three patients with Ebola in 2014. In 2015, five Americans were monitored at the center after being exposed to the virus in West Africa, but none developed the disease. 2234
An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died Christmas morning in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection, the agency said.He is the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month. The boy, who was detained with his father, died shortly after midnight at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, about 90 miles north of the border crossing in El Paso, Texas. He was taken to the hospital Monday after a border agent noticed signs of illness, and the medical staff first diagnosed him with a common cold and later detected a fever."The child was held for an additional 90 minutes for observation and then released from the hospital mid-afternoon on December 24 with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen," CBP said in a news release.Amoxicillin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic. On Monday evening, the boy began vomiting and was taken back to the hospital for evaluation. He died hours later, the CBP said. The official cause of death is unknown. CBP is conducting a review and will release more details as they become available, it said. The Guatemalan government has been notified and is in touch with the father and family members in Guatemala, CBP said. The CBP news release says the Department of Homeland Security is experiencing "a dramatic increase in unaccompanied children and family units arriving at our borders illegally or without authorization," and per law, holds such individuals at federal facilities until they are deported or released into the United States with a notice to appear in court."During their period of detention they received medical screenings and further treatment as needed," it said.A 7-year-old girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, fled Guatemala with her father, and after surviving the 2,000-mile journey to New Mexico, she died December 8, fewer than 48 hours after CBP detained her and her dad.Her body was repatriated Sunday to Guatemala, and her remains were to be transported to the indigenous community of Raxruha, where she called home. Her death marked another flashpoint in the debate over the White House's hard-line approach to immigration enforcement, with many -- including Jakelin's family -- wondering if better medical care may have saved her.Felipe González Morales, the UN special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, said Monday that American authorities "must ensure that an in-depth, independent investigation" is conducted. 2428
