Apple on Monday quietly announced new versions of the iPad Air and iPad mini, the company's first refresh for those products in years.Typically Apple creates fanfare around the arrival of new hardware. But this year it wants the focus of its upcoming spring press event to be all about its rumored streaming service. That's why the company let the world know about its new iPads in a press release. The iPad Air comes with a bigger 10.5-inch display (starting at 9), and the iPad mini has the same 7.9-inch screen (starting at 9). The devices come with an Apple Pencil and a processor that's three times faster than the previous models. The iPad mini will mostly serve as an entertainment device, likely to attract students and teenagers, while the lightweight iPad Air replaces the 10.5-inch iPad Pro in Apple's online store.Apple was widely expected to tease the iPads ahead of its spring event on March 25. But the press release was a surprise."Apple wants to get the iPad out of the way so it can hold its first event truly focused on streaming," Lauren Guenveur, senior research analyst at told CNN Business. "If Apple announced new Pads, it would turn into a hardware event, and that's not what it wants."Tablet shipments have declined in the past few years, especially among devices that don't come with a keyboard. "Perhaps what's the point for having an event for a declining category?" Guenveur added.Guenveur believes the new 10.5-inch iPad Air could struggle to find a place in the market considering the 11-inch iPad Pro is still a more powerful option that also supports the pencil. The iPad Mini, however, could push a decent amount of people to upgrade."There is certainly a market for the iPad Mini, especially among students and teens, but I don't know for how long the upgrade cycle for it will be,' Guenveur said. "I suspect it will do very well for one large upgrade cycle for the rest of the year and then slowly drop off." 1961

As a high school student, the gunman in the Dayton, Ohio, massacre had a "hit list" of classmates he wanted to kill or hurt, according to four former students who said they were told by school officials they were on the list.Spencer Brickler said a counselor at Bellbrook High School told him that he and his sister were on Connor Betts' hit list. Brickler said he was riding on a school bus when he saw Betts getting escorted off by officers who were investigating the threats."He was kind of dark and depressive in high school," said Brickler, who recalled the incident occurring about nine years ago when he was a freshman. He said he had no idea what prompted Betts, then a sophomore, to put him or his sister on the list. The information has taken on new significance now that Betts has been identified as the gunman who killed nine people early Sunday morning in a popular nightlife district in downtown Dayton, authorities said. Police officers on patrol nearby immediately responded and killed Betts less than a minute after he opened fire, authorities said.In response to CNN's inquiries about the hit list, Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools Superintendent Douglas A. Cozad said, "At this point, I can confirm that Connor Betts was a student at Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Local Schools his entire school career and graduated from Bellbrook High School in 2013."Since he has not been a student here for over six years, we are still gathering additional information and will release it as soon as we can," Cozad said.Another former classmate, who asked not to be identified out of concerns for his privacy, also recalled being summoned to a school administrator's office and being told he was "number one" on the list of students Betts wanted to kill.He said the list was separated into two columns: a "kill list" for boys and a "rape list" for girls.A third person, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told CNN that Betts sent messages about the list to one of his classmates, who told her mother. Her mother then notified the police, who came to the school and interviewed people on the list individually in the school's office."Personally, it freaked me out," said the classmate who was told she was on the list. "I started having panic attacks in the school building."A fourth person, who also asked not to be named for privacy reasons, said, "All I know is there was a list of violent actions and a list of names including mine."She said some of the names were female students who, like her, turned him down for dates. She said Betts often simulated shooting other students and threatened to kill himself and others on several occasions."He loved to look at you and pretend to shoot with guns, guns with his hands," she said.Another former classmate, who was not on the list, said that he met Betts through a "friend of a friend." He said whenever they hung out, Betts would talk about violence and use harsh language about women, like calling them "sluts." 2985

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy made it clear he has no interest in seeing his employees unionize. On Monday, Portnoy threatened to fire any employee who makes contact with a writer for Live Science about information on unionizing. In a tweet on Monday, Portnoy wrote, "If you work for @barstoolsports and DM this man I will fire you on the spot." This tweet was in response to a tweet from Rafi Letzter who wrote, "If you work for Barstool and want to have a private chat about the unionization process, how little power your boss has to stop you, and how you can leverage that power to make your life better: my DMs are open."According to the National Labor Relations Board, Portnoy's tweet could potentially break labor regulations. One of the examples the labor board lists for potential violations of the law is, "Threatening employees with loss of jobs or benefits if they join or vote for a union or engage in protected concerted activity."Portnoy's tweet has also drawn backlash from Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She responded to Portnoy's tweet. "If you’re a boss tweeting firing threats to employees trying to unionize, you are likely breaking the law &can be sued,in your words, 'on the spot.' ALL workers in the US have the protected freedom to organize for better conditions," she tweeted. The exchange between Portnoy and Ocasio-Cortez even drew the attention from Donald Trump Jr. Picking a fight with 1450

As worries about the spread of the coronavirus confine millions of Californians to their homes, concern is growing about those who have no homes in which to shelter. California has more than 150,000 homeless people, the most in the nation. And that population is considered disproportionately at risk from the virus because of lifestyle and because many have underlying health conditions that make them vulnerable. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday said 60,000 homeless people could become infected. The governor announced he'll spend 0 million on efforts to prevent the virus from sweeping through that population. 627
