OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Dozens of people packed a room at Surfside Tap Room Thursday night for a well-known patron believed to have been killed in his home.John Roth, 77, was a regular at the bar. More than 50 people came to celebrate his life and drink a final toast.“He served in Vietnam, he was a topographer,” one of his friends, Tom Andrews said. “He crawled through rice paddies to make sure the maps had the right elevations.”“We had some intense conversations, but we would always end up laughing,” he added.Roth’s wife came home and found him dead Tuesday. Police say he suffered trauma to his upper body. His wife told police the garage door was open.RELATED: Oceanside police investigate death of 77-year-old manPolice are investigating Roth's death, calling it suspicious. “It was a really bad thing what happened to him,” said another friend, Chris Ulrey. “I called him 'pops' for like the past four and a half years. Ohio's Attorney General and the U.S. Marshals Service announced the results of Operation Autumn Hope on Monday — a month-long, multi-agency crackdown focused on sexually-based crimes in the state.According to press releases from the U.S. Marshals and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, the operation netted hundreds of arrests for various sex crimes and the "physical recovery" of dozens of missing children throughout the month of October. In its press release, U.S. Marshals Service said Monday that "Operation Autumn Hope" took place "during the month of October," and Yost said in a press release that the operation involved "more than 50 law enforcement agencies" at the local, state and federal level.Throughout the month, Yost said that during the operation, 109 human trafficking victims were referred to social services. It's unclear how many people, if any, were arrested and charged with crimes relating to sex trafficking. Both Yost and the U.S. Marshals also said that 45 "missing or exploited children" were "physically recovered." Of those cases, at least one — that of a missing 15-year-old girl — was confirmed to have been linked to a human trafficking case. It's unclear if any of the other missing children cases involved human trafficking.Yost also said that throughout the month-long operation, 22 people were "apprehended" for seeking to have sex with a minor. It's unclear how many of those will face charges, but among those who are facing charges include "a pastor, students, and a rehabilitation resident advisor."Finally, Yost said that 157 men across the state were arrested "on charges of soliciting and other crimes."Students from Case Western Reserve University's Human Trafficking Law Project were partners in the operation. Ten faculty, law students and masters-level social work students met with survivors in the field and offered free legal representation and social services referrals."This experience allowed our students to witness firsthand a prime example of the inter-professional collaboration that is critical to anti-trafficking efforts," said Laura McNally-Levine, associate dean for Experiential Education at Case. "Participants gained insight into the incredible toll this heinous crime takes on its victims, and observed the difference that can be made by providing survivors with access to legal and social services. We are grateful for the tremendous efforts of law enforcement throughout this operation and for the opportunity to support survivors in such a unique capacity." 2532

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Heavy rains and slick roads may have contributed to a fatal motorcycle crash in Oceanside.A 22-year-old man riding a Yamaha motorcycle on northbound Interstate 5 just south of State Route 76 crashed just after 10 p.m. Friday, just as lightning, thunder, and heavy rain pounded the area, according to California Highway Patrol. The man was transitioning from NB I-5 to the SR-76 off-ramp when he veered off the side of the road and up a dirt embankment. He then traveled back to the paved portion of the off-ramp where he was ejected from the motorcycle, CHP said.RELATED: One dead in multi-car I-15 crash in EscondidoThe man was taken to Tri-City Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man's identity has not been released. 770

One day after Vermont lawmakers approved sweeping gun control measures that include limits on the size of magazines, gun-rights supporters held a large protest outside the state Capitol in Montpelier. And to boost enthusiasm, they handed out gifts: Hundreds of free rifle magazines, each capable of holding 30 rounds of ammunition. The stunt on Saturday was a direct jab at the new legislation, which Vermont Gov. Phil Scott has said he will sign. The amendment to the present law raises the purchase age of guns to 21; bans bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly; and limits rifle magazines to 10 rounds. But Vermont residents will be permitted to keep larger-capacity magazines they already own, creating a sense of urgency among state gun owners looking to stock up before the bill becomes law."My fear is that legislators will pass knee-jerk legislation without any depth, any meaning, and it's really not going to make Vermont any safer," Rob Curtis, one of the rally's organizers, told CNN affiliate WCAX. Curtis is executive editor of Recoil, a firearms lifestyle magazine.Curtis reached out to firearm accessory manufacturer Magpul Industries, which shipped 1,200 magazines overnight to Vermont for the rally -- an operation they dubbed the "Green Mountain Airlift." The magazines are intended for AR-15 and M4 assault-style weapons.Saturday's protest came exactly a week after the March for Our Lives rallies around the country in support of stricter gun control laws. Those student-led March 24 events included a rally in Montpelier that drew several thousand people, according to the Burlington Free Press. Many #NeverAgain activists, who mobilized after the February 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, are calling for a ban on the assault-style rifles for which the magazines are intended. Not surprisingly, gun control advocates slammed Saturday's magazine giveaway."Raising the purchase age and banning high-capacity magazines and bump stocks are bipartisan solutions that are anything but knee-jerk," said Kris Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."And if Rob Curtis is concerned about this legislation making Vermont safer, we'd like to understand how handing out rifle magazines to anyone passing by on the street makes anyone any safer."The Vermont Senate approved the contentious gun-control package on Friday after the House of Representatives passed it earlier. It needs to pass a legal review before it goes to Scott for his signature.Vermont's vote came as other states are weighing gun safety restrictions after 17 people were killed in the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. But some people at Saturday's protest didn't feel that stricter gun laws are the best way to keep students safe."I'm all for protecting the kids, but I don't think this is the way to go about it," Barry Wadle told WCAX. He said he and his wife had been at the statehouse all week lobbying against new gun restrictions."I'm hoping this will wake up the silent majority of Vermonters and get them out to vote and protect their rights," he said. 3168

October 1 has been designated as National Pumpkin Spice Day. It’s a day to sip, smell and savor all things pumpkin spice, as if you needed a reason.First things first, what is pumpkin spice? There is typically no pumpkin in pumpkin spice. The name refers to a blend of spices traditionally used in pumpkin pie. This includes cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. The smell of this blend is nostalgic; bringing back memories of fun fall outings like farms or hayrides, family get togethers, Thanksgiving meals, or cold evenings spent under a warm blanket with a favorite person or pet.Starbucks was one of the first major brands to capitalize on this flavor, introducing their now-famous pumpkin spice lattes in 2003.For the first 12 years, the drink did not contain any pumpkin. Under pressure from a food blogger, Vani Hari, to release the ingredients, Starbucks announced in 2015 the drink would contain pumpkin puree, according to reporting by AdWeek.Since the launch of the PSL, dozens of food and drink brands have introduced pumpkin spice-flavored items in the fall.To make your own batch of pumpkin spice flavoring to dust on everything this season, use this recipe as a base and adjust as you prefer:2 tablespoons ground cinnamon1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg1 teaspoon ground allspice1 teaspoon ground cloves 1362
