SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are spending more and more time commuting for every day while others aren’t commuting at all, according to a new report. The report, released Thursday by Apartment List, claims that the number of “super commuters,” people who travel more than 90 minutes to work each way, has increased by more than 31 percent since 2005. In the same time frame, the number of Americans working from home has increased by 76 percent, according to the report. RELATED: San Diegans lost dozens of hours in 2018 due to traffic congestionIn San Diego, nearly 26,000 people are considered super commuters, totaling 2.1 percent of the population. Another California city, Stockton, pulled ahead of all other metros in the U.S. with more than 11 percent of its population considered super commuters. Apartment List says the cheaper cost of living when compared to the San Francisco Bay Area is a contributing factor. While the share of super commuters in San Diego may be modest, some people have decided not to commute at all. Apartment List says creative and technical jobs lead the working from home charge. The list includes arts, design, entertainment, sports and media. Despite long commutes, there may be some good news. The report claims that those who work from home may enjoy higher earnings because they typically live in high-wage metros. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teenager is publicly apologizing after admitting to vandalizing a park in Scripps Ranch last December. Jerabek park was vandalized on December 8, 2018. Days later, the Scripps Ranch Civic Association offered a reward to find the person who vandalized the field. Neighbors said they believed a large truck drove in circles on the field, destroying the turf. In the association’s August newsletter, the unidentified teenager admits to vandalizing the grass. RELATED: Scripps Ranch community offers reward to find vandal who damaged field“I was at the park that night, along with some friends, and we thought it would be cool to drive on the grass,” the teen writes. “This poor decision caused damage that adversely affected many people who use that park and for that I am truly sorry,” the letter continues. The teen says they grew up playing sports at the park, making the decision "particularly negligent."It’s unclear if the teen will face any charges following the incident. 1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A statue of a dog that sits in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter is often overlooked, but historians say it says a lot about San Diego's past and its present."A lot of people walk by every day and don't even know the story of who Bum is," said Professor David Miller with the San Diego History Center.Bum the Dog was a stray in the 1890s. According to the History Center, he arrived on a boat without an owner or any identification and made himself at home in his new town."He was really owned by nobody but loved by everybody, and he became a symbol of the new San Diego community," said Miller.Throughout his life in San Diego, Bum would wander through all parts of downtown, often bridging the gap between the upper-class areas north of Market Street and the "seedier" parts of the Gaslamp Quarter."This was the area that you had the bars, the saloons, the brothels," said Miller. "Bum didn't live by the social categories that we had created. So he was just as comfortable going to the firehouse as he was going to the brothel or the Chinese butcher shop."Bum also had adventures. Miller tells a story of how he wound up on a train to LA, spent a few days there, and then came back.He also lost a paw in a fight with another dog. Local veterinarians took care of him whenever he got injured."A surgeon had to amputate part of Bum's leg. So he walked around with a limp for the rest of his life, but he was this hero who had to stand up for himself," said Miller. The statue of Bum, also missing a paw, sits in the garden at the Gaslamp Historical Foundation. Most people who walk by it every day never see it.Other parts of San Diego have paid homage to Bum. The city's dog licenses in the early 1900s had his picture on them. And the History Center's kids club is named after Bum.Miller said Bum's story teaches us all about the importance of history."History is fun stories, it's people's lives, it's dogs getting into fights and kicked by horses and getting on trains to LA," said Miller. "But those stories tell us something more important about ourselves and who we are as San Diego."The statue is located on 4th and Island on the Northeast corner. The garden is open to the public every day at 10 a.m. 2237

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After releasing a new study showing the link between free, unstructured play and increased brain development, doctors may now start prescribing playtime for young children. The study, titled "The Power of Play" by the American Academy of Pediatrics, says free, unstructured play, "is brain building, a central part of healthy child development, a key to executive function skills, and a buffer against the negative impacts of stress. Furthermore, play builds the bond between parent and child."The study blames an increase in strict scheduling, more screen time and parents' safety concerns as reasons why play time has dropped by as much as 25% over the last 30 years. The AAP is now advising its member-pediatricians to prescribe playtime to kids when they come in for wellness exams and check-ups."The benefits of play cannot really be overstated in terms of mitigating stress, improving academic skills and helping to build the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that buffer against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience," says Michael Yogman, MD, FAAP, lead author of the AAP report.Local child development experts in San Diego agree, saying free play gives kids life-long skills."That's exactly what children need, especially in pre-school," says Andrea Wilson, the Manager at Rady Children's Hospital's Alexa's Playful Learning Academy for Young Children."That's the opportunity for them to turn-take, build empathy, use their communication skills, learn to be team players."Wilson's school emphasizes unstructured play in its classes. She says parents need to take part at home too, by giving kids choices when they play and letting them lead the way."Tell them, 'You can play with this toy, you can play with that toy,' and see what they want to do from there," says Wilson. "Also ask a lot of open-ended questions and learn with them as well."According to the study, screen-time is one of the biggest reasons kids aren't free-playing anymore. Wilson says it's easy to give kids an alternative, even when they're away from home."Having a bag of books, crayons and manipulative toys is always a better option than putting a screen in front of them," she says.As for how much free play kids need, the study doesn't give a specific set limit. Instead, it says that even as little as 15 minutes of free play showed positive results in kids' stress levels when compared to 15 minutes of being read to.The report also says that parents and doctors need to push schools towards scheduling more recess time, so kids have the chance to explore on their own. 2616
