(CNN) -- President Donald Trump in a statement on Saturday said late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden had been "killed in a United States counterterrorism operation in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region."He did not give a time period for the operation or the death."The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa'ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group," the President said in the statement.Trump also said "Hamza bin Ladin was responsible for planning and dealing with various terrorist groups."CNN previously reported on July 31 that the US believed Hamza bin Laden was dead, citing a US official. The official told CNN at the time that the US had a role in this death but did not provide details.CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank told CNN at the time that one thing puzzled researchers who are closely tracking al Qaeda: "If Hamza bin Laden has indeed been dead for months, you would expect al Qaeda to have released some form of eulogy before today. (KGTV) - A U.S. Navy fighter jet crashed Wednesday morning near Naval Weapons Station China Lake in Central California, military officials said. The single-seat F/A-18E Super Hornet went down about 10 a.m. in Inyo County, Navy officials posted on Twitter. The jet, based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, was on a routine training flight. The cause of the crash is unknown.Death Valley National Park's public information officer Patrick Taylor said he received a call from the Panamint Springs Resort in Darwin of a military plane crash on the west side of Death Valley, near Father Crowley Overlook. The area is also known as "Star Wars Canyon" because the manuevers jets perform are similar to those in the film's battle scenes."We saw the smoke from it," an employee of the resort told 10News.There was no immediate word on the status of the pilot. Two aircraft were flying at the time, but the other pilot likely did not see the crash.Seven park visitors received minor injuries as a result of the crash.A search-and-rescue helicopter was sent to the scene, CNN reported. NWS China Lake and Inyo County sent officers to the area to guard the crash site, Taylor said. Temperatures at the crash site were in the low 100s Wednesday.The jet was part of VFA-151, a squadron belonging to Carrier Air Wing 9 and attached to USS John C. (KGTV) - A bill that would create the option for a third gender marker on California driver's licenses and birth certificates is heading to the state Senate.SB 179, also known as the Gender Recognition Act and introduced by Senator Toni Atkins, passed through the State Assembly 50-13 and will now return to the Senate for approval of amendments made in the assembly.If approved in the Senate, it will head to Governor Jerry Brown's desk for signing.RELATED: San Diegan third in nation to change gender to 'nonbinary'California Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), a co-author of the bill, said the legislation aims to end the stigma and hardships Californians face when it comes to government documentation.“All too often, members of our transgender, intersex, and nonbinary community experience hardships and even stigma when their government documents don’t match their gender presentation," Gloria said in a release. "Despite the divisive rhetoric at the federal level, SB 179 demonstrates the inclusiveness of California and represents recognition from government that people can exist as more than just male or female."In addition to a third gender marker on state-issued identification documents, the bill is also designed to "streamline" the process for transgender, intersex, and nonbinary Californians to get those certificates.RELATED: Oregon becomes first state to allow gender-neutral licensesCurrently, changes to gender in California require proof of "clinically appropriate treatment." Atkins' bill does away with this requirement.Under the bill, anyone who chooses to change their gender would be allowed to "to attest, under penalty of perjury, that the request is to conform the person’s legal gender to the person’s gender identity and not for any fraudulent purpose."If approved, this portion of the bill would go into effect September 2018.In the case of driver's licenses, the bill would require an applicant to have the choices of male, female, or nonbinary, as specified, available.
