A Houston police officer was killed Tuesday and a second officer was injured on Tuesday morning in what Police Chief Ralph Acevedo called a "domestic violence-type situation."The officer killed was Officer Harold Preston, 65, a 41-year-old police veteran. Acevedo described Preston as a great cop "and a better person."According to Acevedo, officers were called to a home in the city's southwest side of the city by a woman who described herself as the estranged wife of the man who lived there. She said she was moving out and needed to collect her belongings, but her husband wouldn't let her in the house.When police approached the door, the suspect allegedly fired at the officers. Preston was shot multiple times in the head. A second officer, Officer Cortney Waller, was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive.Several hours after police first arrived, the suspect emerged from the house and exchanged gunfire with police. The suspect, idnetified as Elmer Manzano, 51, was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive. A mail carrier in West Virginia has pled guilty to attempted election fraud after trying to change the party affiliation on several ballots from Democrat to Republican.Thomas Cooper, who was charged in May, pled guilty Thursday, attempt to defraud the residents of West Virginia of a fair election and one count of injury to the mail, a statement from the Department of Justice said.Cooper delivered letters to Onego, Riverton, and Franklin, West Virginia, all of which are in Pendleton County.According to a statement back in May, a county clerk found that five ballots' party affiliations had been changed from Democrat to Republican, and three other ballots' request had been altered, but their affiliation had not been changed.Cooper said he made the changes as a joke, the statement in May said. 808
A high-profile church pastor was charged with sexually assaulting two young sisters while he was in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for a religious conference.Florida pastor David Rowan was arrested there Tuesday. He's was indicted on rape, unlawful sexual contact and sexual battery by an authority figure.The arrest stemmed from an alleged incident here in Middle Tennessee back in 2014. Rowan was a guest speaker at a religious convention in Murfreesboro.Sex crimes detectives said he convinced the parents of two girls to let him take them to lunch. The family was seeking spiritual guidance from Rowan and trusted him.Police said he brought the 14 and 15-year-old sisters to a local hotel where he took advantage of the situation and molested them.Rowan is a well-known pastor in Milton, Florida, not far from Pensacola.
