SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Wednesday, Southwest Airlines is providing daily, nonstop service from San Diego International Airport to Honolulu. The inaugural flight departed at 8 a.m. from San Diego to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii."We've been anticipating this route for many months and welcome Southwest's new daily service to Honolulu," San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly Becker said."There has always been high demand for leisure travel to both San Diego and Honolulu and, with a military presence in each city, a desire to visit friends and family," she said. "We appreciate Southwest's continued investment in our city as they add Hawaii to their expanding list of nonstop markets from San Diego."Though Wednesday marked Southwest's first daily flight from San Diego to Honolulu, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines also offer service from the airport to Honolulu. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, passengers flying to Hawaii were advised to review the state's travel policy, which includes pre-travel testing program, the Mandatory State of Hawaii Travel and Health Form, and temperature screening upon arrival. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Horses of Tir Na Nog equine sanctuary east of Alpine is inviting members of the public to join its monthly giving campaign and become a "Hay Hero."Donations support sanctuary operating expenses, including feed costs that exceed ,000 per year. The volunteer-driven nonprofit partners with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to care for horses rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment."By making a monthly pledge, our Hay Heroes are helping us meet our most basic commitment to provide our horses with a high-quality diet," Administrator Amy Pat Rigney said. "Hay Heroes can choose the amount of their monthly commitment. When feeding 58 equines, no gift is too small. Everything helps." The sanctuary is a nonriding facility, though the community is invited to meet some of the horses under care. The 15-year-old facility is named after an Irish legend about an old horse that becomes young again. 951

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. Our priority now is to ensure he continues to thrive and acclimates well to his new surroundings.” 1302

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit Tuesday promised a thorough investigation into allegations that one of his officers uploaded a social media post mocking a roadside memorial for a robbery suspect fatally shot three months ago by that lawman and a patrol partner.SDPD Officer Jonathon Lucas was immediately suspended without pay after the online image seemingly belittling the death of 25-year-old Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra appeared on Instagram last week, Nisleit told reporters during a mid-afternoon briefing at downtown police headquarters."I am shocked and disturbed by the reports of this officer's conduct," the chief said about the post, in which emojis of laughing and tearfully wailing faces were superimposed over a photo of the makeshift tribute to Ibarra at the site where he was shot."The officer's alleged actions fall short of the high standards I and our community have for the San Diego Police Department," Nisleit said.Late on the afternoon of June 27, Lucas and Officer Tevar Zaki opened fire on Ibarra, a suspect in a recent robbery, when he allegedly pulled a revolver from his waistband and pointed it at them as they approached him in the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue in the Core-Columbia district.Ibarra succumbed to his gunshot wounds in a hospital two days later. The shooting prompted demonstrations by protesters alleging a culture of excessive use of force and racial bias on the part of the San Diego Police Department. While condemning the antagonistic online posting Tuesday afternoon, the police chief offered a message to Ibarra's survivors."I want to apologize to the Ibarra family," Nisleit said. "This unnecessary act only reopens wounds during an already painful time."In addition to placing Lucas, a four-year member of the SDPD, on unpaid leave, Nisleit revoked his police powers pending completion of the in- house probe into the matter."I want to assure our community that I do not take these allegations lightly," the chief said. "Officers take an oath to protect and value all life. And ... I clearly understand this is a critical time in relationships between law enforcement and the communities that we serve. I want to send a clear message that this behavior is not acceptable in the San Diego Police Department and does not reflect the values of the men and women of this department."Nisleit also pledged to be "transparent with our findings" that result from the internal investigation, though he acknowledged that state law protecting the privacy of police personnel might prevent a full disclosure of any punitive actions -- including, potentially, job termination -- ultimately taken against the accused officer. 2689

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to extend an agreement with Southern California Edison to receive emergency planning funds from the utility as it removes spent nuclear fuel from the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station. The county's Office of Emergency Services entered a similar memorandum of understanding with SCE in 2015, through which the company provided radiological emergency planning funds to five jurisdictions around the plant, including San Diego County, through the end of Fiscal Year 2019-20.A county staff report estimates SCE will pay the county 6,500 in the remainder of the agreement. The remainder of the spent fuel is planned to be moved from spent fuel pools to dry cask storage by the end of this summer, but the memorandum approved by the board runs through the end of Fiscal Year 2049 or whenever all spent fuel is removed from the site -- whichever comes first. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of California do not require decommissioned nuclear power plants to reimburse local jurisdictions for emergency planning, but SCE has agreed to continue paying jurisdictions surrounding the plant, for planning and preparation for radiological emergencies.San Onofre hasn't produced power since a steam leak in 2012, and SCE closed the plant the following year and began decommissioning activities. When the California Coastal Commission voted 9-0 last October to allow SCE to begin dismantling the plant, the canisters were being moved from a "wet storage" facility to a newly constructed "dry storage" facility on the site. San Onofre is located on 85 acres of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and is home to 3.55 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel, the San Diego Union Tribune reported last year. The nuclear waste is being stored in self-cooling canisters which take in cool air and expel hot air. 1925
