LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — East County residents say they're behind a local dog rescue's efforts to provide for canines, but that the facility has been operating dangerously.Suzy Avalos lives next door to the Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue, which is run out of a La Mesa home. She tells 10News the dogs that reside in the yard have had no problem jumping the fence."You see the fence is not high. It's right up here. The dogs don't have a problem jumping over this fence," Avalos said. "I've lived here for 10 years and it's just progressively getting worse."RELATED: Disease fatal to dogs that can spread to humans on the rise in some statesWhen the dogs escape they can also be aggressive, neighbors say, with at least one dangerous incident being recorded. 10News obtained records from the La Mesa Police Department showing at least 28 instances where officers responded to the dog rescue to help round up escaped canines or help people who say they were attacked by the dogs."We have a lot of people on this street that have young kids and I'm just worried a child is going to get bit or something worse is going to happen," Avalos said. "They're out of control and she should not have a license."The woman who runs the dog rescue, Donna, declined an interview by 10News. While they support the idea of rescuing the dogs, they say it needs to be done more responsibly. LA MESA (KGTV) -- A businessman attacked a group of reporters on a La Mesa sidewalk. It all started with reports of lewd acts outside his business.La Mesa Police Department investigators are looking into harassment claims after a disturbing video captured outside a local business circulated online. A snap shot from that video appears to show a man and a woman outside Peter's Men Apparel, a local men's clothing retailer on La Mesa Blvd. over the weekend.The man in the video appears to have his hands up a woman's shirt.REPORT: La Mesa Police looking into harassment claims at local businessPolice said they've received at least two crime reports — one for battery and one for lewd act in public — in regards to separate incidents at the store on Saturday, Jan. 18.News crews returned to area near where the incident occurred to talk with the owner at Peter's Men Apparel. A man outside of the store started assaulting a photographer and then began hitting another reporter, which resulted in a brief fight.Video from the attack shows the man cursing at everyone, attacking a photographer, and slapping a phone out of reporter's hand before walking into the store.La Mesa police officers responded to the scene and are working with the reporters to gather information about the attack.The crews that were assaulted will be pressing charges.As for the incidents over the weekend, police haven't named the suspect. La Mesa investigators have not identified the man in the video.10News reporter Mimi Elkalla spoke with the owner of Peter's Men Apparel, Peter Carzis, on Monday and he seemed to laugh off the situation regarding the lewd video. He said he knew it was inappropriate, but didn't see what the big deal was and claimed the woman came onto him.Police were also looking into reports that the owner spit on a man as he was walking down La Mesa Blvd with his wife on Saturday. LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. Las Vegas police say they have found the body of a young child inside of a duffel bag after a mother told them that her 3-year-old daughter disappeared during a walk to a local grocery store.The woman called police around 9 p.m. local time Thursday. She told police she was walking with her four young children to Albertson’s, across the street from her apartment complex.The child's grandmother also contacted Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas and told the TV station that her grandchild was missing.Police officers searched the woman’s apartment first, not finding anything, and then the neighborhood. They decided to search the apartment again because parts of the woman’s story did not add up.During the second search, the body of a small child was found in a bag in a closet. Police officers detected a strong odor and it appears the body may have been in the closet for a few days. The woman was placed in custody and the other three children are in protective custody.The missing girl's father was arrested earlier this week after police received a call about a domestic disturbance.   1115
