BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday called for the proper handling of the serious consequences of the March sinking of a South Korean warship, and efforts to gradually ease tensions in the region over the incident."The pressing task for the moment is to properly handle the serious impact caused by the Cheonan incident, defuse tensions in the region, and most importantly of all, avoid possible conflicts," Wen said.Wen was speaking at a joint press conference following a two-day summit meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on the South Korean resort island.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the second phase of the third trilateral summit in South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju on May 30, 2010. Taipei, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Signing the cross-Strait economic and trade pact, ECFA, will benefit Taiwan, Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said here Sunday in a television debate.Ma debated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen during a two-hour televised debate over the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA), a free trade agreement the Taiwan authority intends to sign with the Chinese mainland.Taiwan urgently needs a trade pact with China to usher in a golden decade of economic boom, Ma said, accusing DPP of exaggerating the adverse effects of ECFA and manipulating public fear.Lee Tung-Hao, a professor with the National Chengchi University, said there are different voices over ECFA because of public misunderstanding of the pact, but the debate will help build consensus. The ECFA, a priority in cross-Strait relations, is aimed at institutionalizing economic cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan and facilitating and regularizing economic and trade exchanges.

CHICAGO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The macroeconomic control policies adopted by the Chinese government since mid-2008 have been proven successful, two economists said Saturday.Since late 2008, the Chinese government has taken a series of macroeconomic control policies to deal with the global financial crisis. The government carried on massive financial investment, some of which focused on real estate."In spite of some problems, the Chinese government has been making great progress in regulating and controlling the Chinese economy during the global financial crisis," Min Tang, a Chinese economist, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua."Everything has two sides, good and bad. This macroeconomic control policy is an action taken to fight against a crisis," he said.Tang believed that whether or not the policies are successful should be judged from the macro perspective instead of a micro perspective."China was able to resume its rapid growth first when the global economy was still going downhill," Tang said, "China also successfully kept the confidence of its people and enterprises, which is more important than anything else. Therefore, the government's macro control is very successful."
