PHNOM PENH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported on Monday that some 54 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in the first nine months of this year, compared to 37 kids dying of the disease in the whole year of 2010.From January to September this year, some 12,392 cases of dengue fever had been reported with 54 children killed by the disease. The whole year 2010 reported only 5,497 cases, Ngan Chantha, director of dengue control at the Ministry of Health, said on Monday."This year's rainy season has been plagued by floods, leading to more cases of the disease," he said. "I would like to appeal to parents to let their children sleep under mosquito nets and if their kids have any symptom that is suspicious of the disease, they should urgently send them for medical attention."Dengue is caused by mosquitoes. The disease causes an acute illness of sudden onset that usually follows symptoms such as headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands and rash.In Cambodia, the outbreak of dengue fever usually begins at the onset of the rainy season from May to October. 

SHANGHAI, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has allowed the Bank of East Asia (BEA) to issue yuan-denominated bonds in Hong Kong for a second time, about three years after it became the first foreign-invested bank to make a yuan bond issuance, the bank said Wednesday.BEA China Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BEA, was given the approval by the National Development and Reform Commission of China to issue yuan bonds in Hong Kong, it said.Details on the amounts and timing of the offerings weren't available. In 2009, in a major landmark, the BEA issued its first yuan bonds in Hong Kong in an aggregate principal amount of 4 billion yuan (630 million U.S. dollars).The BEA was among the first foreign-invested banks to be given the green light to issue yuan-denominated bonds in Hong Kong, a move analysts say will bolster the international influence of the Chinese currency, also known as renminbi.Sun Minjie, deputy head of BEA China, said the second bond issuance will give the bank stable access to capital, improve its debt portfolio, and support its development on the Chinese mainland.

NANJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in China's eastern Jiangsu Province on Sunday intensified their search for the suspect in an armed robbery in the province.Police have increased patrol and initiated a blanket search for the male suspect, who shot and robbed a man in front of a bank in Nanjing, the provincial capital, on Friday, the provincial public security bureau said in a statement.In Nanjing, special armed police and police cars have blocked major roads, with many others searching in public places. Two helicopters are used to facilitate the search.The provincial police authorities also offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (15,850 U.S. dollars) for information leading to the arrest of the man believed to be in his 40s.The suspect shot a man who had just finished withdrawing 200,000 yuan in front of a bank on Nanjing's Dongmen Street at 9:50 a.m. Friday. BEIJING, Oct. 12(Xinhuanet) -- People allergic to peanuts may find relief in a new research by American scientists, according to Huffington Post Monday.Scientists from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have found a way to turn off allergic responses by creating an immune system tolerant to peanuts.They attached peanut proteins, the source of the allergy, to white blood cells of mice. Then the mice's immune systems would recognise the proteins and become tolerant to them.When people eat peanuts, allergic human bodies would recognize peanut proteins as invading pathogens and trigger immune responses like throat swelling, even closing up, which can be lethal. Ditto for mice's bodies.But when peanut protein attached to the body's own cells, the immune systems would regard the peanut proteins as perfectly normal and not attack the cells, said Paul Bryce, an assistant professor involved in the study. Then the allergic responses disappeared.The research was conducted on mice. But the scientists expected the method to cure peanut allergies could apply to humans, according to Huffington Post.Although the research was promising, it did not mean that peanut allergies in humans could be actually cured in the foreseeable future, said Dr. Clifford Basset medical director at Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, to ABC News, "Its all about education, prevention and preparedness".

BEIJING Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have found a plant in Brazil using leaves to capture the tiny worms in the soil, according to Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S.The plant, named Philcoxia, was found in the tropical grassland of Brazil, where the biodiversity is well conserved.As the scientists searching for the answer of why the plant grows the leaves underground, they found the 1.5 millimeters-wide leaves can trap the worms and produce a digestive enzyme to help its roots to absorb the nutrition.Although it is not the first meat-eating plant to be discovered, the finding has still "broaden up our perception about plants," according to researcher Rafael Silva Oliveira, a plant ecologist at the State University of Campinas in Brazil.It suggests that carnivorous plants "may have evolved independently more times in plants than previously thought," he added
