SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a chance for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look into local policing. The program, Inside SDPD, held a few times a year, aims to bridge the gap between the community and local law enforcement. As seen through local demonstrations against police brutality and rogue officers, there can be a divide that exists between law enforcement and the public. “We’re not here to say we hate all police, that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to say that law enforcement who is acting outside the bounds of justice, equality, equity… those officers need to be fired. They need to be arrested. They need to be jailed if need be,” said Yusef Miller of the Racial Justice Coalition during an October demonstration in San Diego.There is one thing both sides agree on: wanting to build better relationships. San Diego Police see Inside SDPD as helping with that goal. It's hosted in coordination with the San Diego Police Foundation. The program introduces participants into various aspects of policing, including Taser use, use of force simulations, traffic stops, and K9 demonstrations. The goal is to make situations as realistic as possible. For first-time participant Helen Auerbach, it was eye-opening. “Certainty with the body cameras and the shootings. When you see it from one angle and you see the same thing from a different angle, it’s a completely different scenario,” she said. Teenager Logan Miller also participated. “You’re told it’s a simulation, but when you have the props… and the sound [is] very, very loud and you’re actually being interacted with on screen… again the world I keep saying [is] realistic. You are submerged in that situation,” Miller said.Team 10 asked Assistant San Diego Police Chief Paul Connelly what he would say to critics of the department. “I would just say keep an open mind. We have a very difficult job to do,” he said. In an era where community members are demanding transparency, he said the department continues to work toward that goal. “That’s something the San Diego Police Department is really striving to do. For instance, all our policies and procedures can be found on our website. And we hold events like these to invite the community out so they can see exactly how we’re trained.” Auerbach, who found out about the event through an online neighborhood website, recommends the program. “I really thing everyone should do this. I think every child should be exposed to this in school,” Auerbach said. The next "Inside SDPD" event is in December, focused specifically on K9s. There is a suggested donation for the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Imagine having the power to change your body’s temperature at any time, regardless of how hot or cold it actually is. UC San Diego engineers are on they’re way to doing just that, with a wearable patch.Like a thermostat, it can be changed to a specific temperature, warming or cooling the body, using far less energy than an air conditioning system. “Cooling is a really important issue faced by society today. If you look at news reports there are extreme weather conditions, for example in India, peak temperature could be over 50 degrees Celsius in July," said Renkun Chen, a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC San Diego.The patch is made up of thermoelectric alloys - materials that use electricity to create a temperature difference and vice versa - sandwiched between stretchy elastomer sheets. The device physically cools or heats the skin to a temperature that the wearer chooses. The patch is powered by a flexible battery pack. It is made of an array of coin cells all connected by spring-shaped copper wires and embedded in a stretchable material. The system also includes a stretchable circuit board.By regulating the temperature around an individual person, rather than a large room, the smart fabric could potentially cut the energy use of buildings and homes by at least 15 percent.The technology could also be used for people who work in extreme environments, like firefighters or miners. Eventually, Chen and his team want to integrate the technology into clothing. They hope to sell it commercially in the next few years, along with developing a mobile app to control the temperature. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been a tumultuous year for East Village's Monkey Paw Brewery.The local brewing company was purchased by Coronado Brewing Company in July 2017, put up for sale in May of this year, and closed its downtown San Diego brewpub Monday.Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) CEO Brandon Richards said in May, months after finalizing the purchase, the sale was part of a refocusing for CBC.RELATED: Miramar's Intergalactic Brewery is closing its doors"While we were excited about the potential of Monkey Paw, the decision to sell came from the need to refocus our energy toward Coronado Brewing," Richards said.
