SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish.The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. This is a momentous event for our team and our seahorse and seadragon breeding program,” said Jennifer Nero Moffatt, the aquarium’s senior director of animal care, science and conservation. “Seadragons are charismatic, sensitive, and require detailed husbandry. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. The fish's habitat and camouflage make it extremely difficult to locate in the wild. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cockatiels rescued from unsanitary conditions in a Rancho Bernardo apartment are now available for adoption, the San Diego Humane society announced Tuesday. Humane Society Law Enforcement Officers seized more than 80 birds from one unit Jan. 23. They were flying freely through the home, creating an unhealthy situation, shelter officials said.Veterinarians cleared the birds for adoption. The cockatiels will need socialization and time to adjust to their new homes, according to the Humane Society. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Anyone touched by Alzheimer's knows how painful the disease is. "It's affected my family. It's affected most families. It's such a prevalent disease. As people get older, it becomes quite likely this will become an issue," said Paul Aisen, director of USC's Alzheimer's Therapeutic Research Clinic (ACTC).Aisen's team began their research in San Diego many years ago and teamed up with USC about four years ago. He's spent over 30 years trying to solve Alzheimer's mysteries and is leading the upcoming clinical trial.Aisen says the large-scale study is the culmination of decades of work from scientists worldwide."Our focus lately has been trying to alter the disease, prevent it, or significantly slow its progression. How should we do that? We think attacking amyloid early is the most promising approach," said Aisen. Researchers believe sticky amyloid deposits, which form on the brain later in life, start the Alzheimer's process. Aging, genetics, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to amyloid build-up.The worldwide clinical trial aims to target amyloid. A drug called BAN2401 will be delivered intravenously, designed to bind to the sticky amyloid. The binding neutralizes beta amyloid and helps "tag" it, so the immune system can recognize it and clear it from the brain. A previous phase 2 study showed that BAN2401 removes brain amyloid and possibly slows cognitive decline.They're seeking participants over 50 who are not yet showing symptoms of Alzheimer's but do have elevated amounts of amyloid on their brain. Researchers can determine that through a PET scan or spinal tap. "We think that the most promising approach of all is to take a vigorous attack on amyloid while the brain is still functioning normally. And we can see amyloid in people many years before they develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's."Investigators hope that by treating a patient with BAN2401 very early in the disease, before symptoms occur, it will significantly slow disease progression. "If we're successful, it will have a huge impact on human health," said Aisen. There will be 100 sites worldwide for the study, including major cities like San Diego and Los Angeles. Study participants will receive treatment for four years, given either the drug or a placebo. Results are expected in seven years, Aisen says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. "Flap Your Jacks" is bringing its own take on the traditional breakfast dish to North Park later this summer.
