CLEVELAND — Three suspects were arrested after an officer was shot and killed in Cleveland's Stockyard neighborhood Thursday evening.The unidentified suspects was arrested Friday morning.The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 65th Street near Storer Avenue, police said.The officer, later identified as Det. James Skernivitz, was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died from his injuries, according to the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association.Police said another person was confirmed dead on the scene but was not a suspect.Skernivitz's identity was held pending the notification of his family, as he is married with children, police said.Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association said Skernivitz has been on the force for "a while," was "well-liked" and was a "good man.""This one hurts," Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association president Jeff Follmer said.Skernivitz was a 25-year veteran of the Cleveland Division of Police, authorities said."We definitely need the prayers of the people in the city. Cooking shows are popular and can be addicting to watch. However, one self-proclaimed diet guru believes shows like the "The Great American Baking Show" should come with a warning that it advocates obesity.Do cooking shows really have an effect on how much watchers end up consuming? Eight in 10 adults watch cooking shows, according to research by MarketingCharts.com.    Many of those cooking shows don’t necessarily promote healthy eating. But Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor of psychology at University of Colorado Denver, says you can’t correlate obesity to cooking shows.“The overweight and obesity issue in this country is around--depending on your numbers-- is 60 to 70 percent of the population,” says Masters. “And you’re talking about a very small population even watch these shows, much less we could say are influenced by them.”   However, Marketing Charts research also found that 57 percent of those who watch these cooking shows purchase food as a direct result of something they saw on the show.   "Some people will plant a thought that they weren't having before,” Dr. Masters explains. “Will it actually lead to action in a particular instance? That's going to depend on a whole lot of other factors."  Dr. Masters says you might have people make or buy fatty, sugary food after watching a cooking show, but that doesn't mean these shows are the direct cause of people in America being overweight.   "I think what's more likely is the audience attracted to those shows--maybe an audience that's more attracted to that kind of eating anyway--and finds something in the show that's of interest to them."   1689

Community Health Centers that care for hundreds of thousands of low-income San Diegans are bracing for deep cuts. Congress has to act by Sept. 30 to maintain the funds to the centers, or services will start to decrease."This conversation is, do you have a doctor when you need one, who will see you?" said Vernita Todd, Vice President of Health Center Partners of Southern California, an association of 17 health centers in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The centers are concerned about million of federal money that Congress has yet to renew. The money goes to lower the cost of services like primary care, vaccinations, cancer screenings and physicals. It can help turn a visit that would normally cost 0 into a visit. "If they can't afford it, does that mean they'll forego treatment? Will they forego going to the doctor? Will they skip vaccinations for their children?" Todd said. Earlier this month, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced a bill to continue the funding for community health centers. It has 13 bipartisan supporters. Her spokesman says she's exploring different ways to move the legislation forward. Todd says she's not concerned the bill wouldn't pass. She just wants it to come up for a vote. But she's worried Congress isn't paying attention to the health center needs because it's focused on issues like Hurricane recovery, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and Immigration. She says the centers would start taking hits Oct. 1, when money for a program that essentially gets doctors to health centers dries up.Then, on Jan. 1, they would lose the biggest lump sum, which could lead to layoffs, closures, and fewer services. There are six San Diego health center locations, including City Heights, San Ysidro, and Vista.
