(KGTV) — State wildlife officials are warning people not to feed deer in Northern California to help control the outbreak of a fatal disease in the animals.Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say they have confirmed outbreaks of "adenovirus hemorrhagic disease" in deer across several Northern California counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo counties. The disease is typically fatal to deer and can be spread by animals in close contact with each other. The virus is not known to affect humans, pets, or domestic livestock.Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease, or CdAdV-1, isn't new. In 1993-1994, an outbreak of the virus was reported in black-tailed deer and mule deer in 18 counties. Since that outbreak, the virus has been identified as the cause of sporadic and widespread hemorrhagic disease in deer in California and other western states.The disease causes excessive salivation (drooling or foaming at the mouth), diarrhea, regurgitation, or seizures in infected deer, however, those animals infected are often found dead with obvious symptoms, sometimes near water.Deer fawns are at the greatest risk of the disease, according to CDFW.Officials say feeding deer can cause the animal to gather and spread the virus to each other."Providing attractants for deer – food, salt licks or even water – is against the law for good reason," said Brandon Munk, senior wildlife veterinarian with CDFW’s Wildlife Investigations Laboratory. "Because these artificial attractants can congregate animals and promote the spread of disease, it’s particularly imperative to leave wildlife alone during an outbreak. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease, so our best management strategies right now are to track it carefully, and to take preventative measures to limit the spread."People can help officials track and study the disease by reporting sightings of sick or dead deer. 1909

(KGTV) -- The new school year begins Monday morning for the Sweetwater Union High School District, and classes will be very different this time around for students and teachers due to the coronavirus pandemic.Starting Monday, Aug. 3, classes will be taught online, with all students equipped with district-issued computers, laptops or tablets to connect with teachers.SUHSD students will be on a daily block schedule that puts them in three classes per day with 30-45 minutes of virtual face time with teachers. Students’ remaining time will be independent study to complete coursework.District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin with distance learning through at least Oct. 2. According to the district, the goal is to provide flexibility to begin the school year so adjustments can be made along the way.During the school year, the district plans to evaluate the possibility of a return to in-class instruction on three dates:-- Sept. 21: District will assess whether distance learning will continue after fall break.-- Nov. 30: District will assess whether distance learning will continue into second semester or potentially bring 10% of students back to schools.-- March 1: District will assess whether distance learning will continue through the end of the school year.If in-class instruction is allowed, all schools will have safety protocols in place that will be monitored. 1404

4-H programs across the country are known for their youth development programs. Now, students in 4-H are taking their civic engagement to the next level by helping others amid the COVID-19 pandemic."We’ve got partnerships with UC Davis and San Francisco medical centers where we’re getting sterile wrap and then young people are recycling that material and making masks for front-line workers, for agriculture laborers, for people working in restaurants," says Lynn Schmitt-McQuitty, California's 4-H Director. She says groups across the state are making masks and shields for essential workers and people who need them.In Sonoma County, several 4-H families spent their time in quarantine putting several 3-D printers to good use."We decided to start printing face shields. We printed a few different designs and used the transparency overhead and members of our community joined us. Together we printed over 1,000 face shields and 2,000 neck straps which are the straps that keep the masks off the ears of essential workers," says Jametha Cosgrove of Golden Hills 4-H. The protective gear went to their local essential workers and even nurses and doctors across the state who needed them.Santa Clara County 4-H ambassador Joey Jacoby put together mask-making kits and is distributing cloth masks to the community as part of his service learning project."The masks are just clean, fresh, cotton material so 100% cotton masks," says Jacoby. Jacoby blew away his original goal of 350 masks with the help of numerous donations and other 4-H volunteers. They ultimately produced more than 2,000 masks and face shields and counting.“We had the distribution event where anyone who had supplies could drive up in their car, open their trunk and then we would place items into their trunk. There was never any contact. We were well over six feet apart the entire time," says Jacoby."My job was to sew the bins on and sew the edge," says Aaron Alger, whose sister and parents, all former 4-H students, helped in the project. In total, more than 36 families helped Jacoby put together masks and gather materials, including Karen Clayton, who is a project leader for Stevens Creek 4-H."The opportunity to step up and just provide fabric where I quilt, I have too much fabric and I was more than happy to pull some together for Joey and his service learning project. (KGTV) -- Two local families are now connected in a special way, thanks to Lifesharing, the organ donation group serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. Lifesharing arranged a meeting between a North County family and the man who received their son’s heart.Mathieu Bergeron died last May after a tragic skateboarding accident. The 20-year-old was a registered organ donor.Bergeron’s heart saved the life of Dr. Murray Alsip, who was suffering from a heart condition that made it difficult to walk and, at times, to even breathe.Alsip said he had “one foot in the grave” before he was saved by Bergeron’s precious gift.The family meeting was both joyful and emotional. With the aid of a stethoscope, Bergeron’s parents and high school sweetheart got to listen to the heart beating inside of Alsip’s chest.Both families agreed to share their story in an effort to encourage others to say “yes” to organ and tissue donation.Statistics from LifeSharing San Diego: 973
