SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Community Resource Center, a non-profit dedicated to helping families in need, was able to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver holiday happiness to North County families.Every year, the CRC does their annual "Holiday Baskets" program, where families in need get a shopping spree-style day at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to get food, toys, clothing, and more for the holidays.But in 2020, the pandemic made the annual shopping spree impossible because of state and county health guidelines.So the CRC changed things up a bit, turning the event into a drive-thru.Now, instead of walking through a shopping area and picking out items, families will drive through the fairgrounds and have things handed to them in their cars."We'll have a pre-made box of food for each family, we'll have pre-made boxes of blankets for each family, and a pre-made box with family gifts," says CRC CEO John Van Cleef. "So the ability to choose gifts has changed this year, but we'll be providing puzzles, board games, and other family-based gifts."Because of the changes, the CRC could only assist 1,100 families, which is down from their usual 1,600.It may have been even fewer if not for the help of a 15-year old girl."There's always a way that we can help each other out," says Lucie Babcock, who has been volunteering with the CRC since she was 9.For the past five years, Lucie has held bake sales or lemonade stands to raise money for the CRC. She then uses the money to buy toys and gifts for the families.Because of the Pandemic, she couldn't do her usual fundraising.Instead, Lucie wrote letters to family and friends asking for donations. She raised 0."Even if it seems like maybe you don't have the connections to make a difference, there's always a way," she says.Van Cleef says people like Lucie inspire him to keep helping others.The Holiday Baskets event is Saturday, Dec. 4, but families must pre-register to participate. 1952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Navy is trying to find the owner of a boat that washed ashore at the Naval Base Coronado.The boat washed up and came to a rest against the fence that separated Coronado’s dog beach from the base.The Navy is asking the owner to come forward immediately to have the boat removed. The problem can get costly for the Navy.Several boats have already washed ashore this year. If the Navy can’t locate the owner, they have to cover the removal cost.Anyone with information on the boat’s owner is asked to call the Navy legal office at 619-545-8141. 573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The first-ever professional sports event to be held on an active military base will be held in San Diego this February.As a special thank you to the military, the San Diego Seals pro lacrosse team will play a regular season game on the flight line of MCAS Miramar on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, against the Vancouver Warriors. Coli during visits to the San Diego County Fair this summer have filed claims against the company that operates the fair.Attorneys representing the families of Jedidiah King Cabezuela, Cristiano Lopez, and Ryan Sadrabadi filed legal documents on Monday."Our investigation has already turned enough information for us to determine that these illnesses were entirely preventable," said Ron Simon, one of the attorneys representing the families.County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency confirmed 11 cases of E. Coli, all of which involve children ranging in age from two to 13. The outbreak was traced to children that visited the animal areas or the petting zoo, or had other animal contact at the fair, county health officials previously reported, and that the illnesses had no link to any food facilities the children accessed.2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela, from National City, suffered stomach problems four days after visiting the fair on June 15 despite washing his hands following a stop at the petting zoo, a family member told 10News. E. Coli can incubate over a period of 10 days.Over the next three days, Jedidiah was in and out of the emergency room before the symptoms worsened. His kidneys began failing, and he died from Shiga-toxin-producing E. Coli June 24.On June 28, fair officials closed public access to all animal areas at the livestock barn on the eastern side of the Del Mar Fairgrounds."The Cabezuelas, the Lopez's, and the Sadrabadis took their families to the fair expecting to have a good time," said Ben Coughlan of Gomez Trial Attorneys. "No family should have to be concerned about their children getting sick, or worse, at a Fair geared towards attracting families and children."Officials with the 22nd District Agricultural Association, the company that runs the fair, said they anticipate the animal exhibit to return with more safeguards and policies next season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mountain lion euthanized by California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens is the same animal responsible for attacking a boy at Los Pe?asquitos Canyon Preserve, CDFW announced Friday. The 4-year-old boy was among 11 people hiking the North San Diego County trail Memorial Day when the 80-pound female mountain lion attacked him. Wardens who went to the scene found the animal’s tracks and encountered it moments later. The mountain lion appeared to have little fear of humans: an abnormal behavior, CDFW said.
