SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 55-year-old homeless man who was attacked with a skateboard while sleeping in North Park has died, San Diego Police said.Arthur Angulo was sleeping in alley in the 2800 block of El Cajon Boulevard  at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday when a man bashed him repeatedly with a skateboard, according to police.  Angulo suffered ``visible signs of major trauma to his upper body,'' San Diego police homicide Lt. Todd Griffin said.``The attack was unprovoked," officer Tony Martinez said over the weekend.RELATED: Sleeping homeless man attacked in North ParkAngulo was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where medical staff determined he would not survive and placed him on life support, Griffin said.He was removed from life support Thursday "and died in the hospital as the result of his injuries,'" Griffin said.Police said the attacker is white, about six feet tall, and between 19 and 26 years old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10News sat down exclusively with Father Joe Carroll to talk about his legacy and fight against homelessness.He got involved with the homeless in San Diego in 1982. "The bishop called me in his office told me, the next day he's going to appoint me head of St. Vincent de Paul and my job was to build a shelter."Immediately assigned as the guy to find a solution to the problem, "When I first started, I'd be writing letters, 'please help me, please help me' and I'd get stacks back, 'no, no, no'."Despite dealing with rejection and other challenges early on, Father Joe has remained committed to fighting homelessness for decades. As Father Joe says, "the rest is history."He remembers ten years ago when he first recognized the problem of homelessness was growing. "We ignored it and we ignored it and had all these crazy ideas which I still think they have, so, I still think it's not reachable for a few more decades."Father Joe may be retired but he's still involved weekly in the fight against homelessness.As he watches the City of San Diego continue to try and solve the problems, he tells 10News, "housing is not the answer to homelessness."He says, instead, the answer is rehabilitation.After decades of fighting homelessness, Father Joe says the answers come from the individuals themselves, "slowly but surely I learned you had to talk to the homeless first to know what you're doing."While he's more removed from Father Joe's Villages since retirement, he still talks with the homeless community daily."Everyday I get out of here, I shake hands with people who are success stories, and that's what makes me want to do more." 1663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A five-week-old sea otter found stranded by strong currents in Alaska is now being cared for by SeaWorld San Diego.SeaWorld announced the sea otter pup, Cinder, was found orphaned near Homer, Alaska, on Aug. 18 before being brought to their care last Saturday. Cinder was underweight and dehydrated when she was taken to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seaward, Alaska.But the young otter pup learned quickly to feed from a bottle and stabilized before making the trip to San Diego.Since the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed her non-releasable, SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care in the park's sea otter nursery.SeaWorld says Cinder's condition is good and she's adjusting well to her new home. Staff are also acting as a sort of surrogate mother, helping Cinder learn to swim and groom herself.For the time being, the sea otter will remain in the park's nursery. But soon, she'll be introduced to the park's four other female sea otters — which are also rescued orphaned pups.The park hopes to be able to introduce Cinder to park visitors in the near future. 1133

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men were shot Saturday evening while standing on a sidewalk in the Mountain View area of San Diego.It happened about 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of South 45th Street, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The two victims were standing on the sidewalk with others, Heims said. "A vehicle was eastbound on Newton Avenue when it stopped in the intersection and someone inside fired multiple rounds at the group."A 44-year-old man was shot in the head and paramedics took him to a hospital, the officer said. "At this time, his injuries are non-life-threatening."A 29-year-old man was shot in the right arm and driven to a hospital by an unknown person, Heims said. His wound was not believed life-threatening.The car involved in the shooting was described as an early model small, light-colored sedan. 830
