SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the city of San Diego is one of four cities in the state that will receive 0,000 in state funding to support residents affected by power shutoffs due to the threat of wildfires.While visiting Sonoma County emergency responders, local officials and residents affected by the Kincade Fire, Newsom announced the establishment of the Local Government Public Safety Power Shutoffs Resiliency Program, which will provide funding to local governments to maintain power service to high- risk areas affected by power shutoffs.San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose and Oakland will each receive 0,000 in state funding through the program and all 58 counties in the state will receive at least 0,000 each. An additional million will be made available through a competitive grant process for incorporated areas of the state and .5 million will be available for tribal governments.The state included million in one-time funding in the state's 2019 budget to maintain public safety and limit the effects of power shutoffs by companies like San Diego Gas & Electric and Pacific Gas & Electric. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As San Diego County heads into a "Halloweekend," public health officials are urging members of the public to practice COVID-19 protocols -- including avoiding large gatherings such as Halloween parties and door-to-door trick-or-treating."These activities involve face-to-face interactions with people from different households," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a COVID-19 infection is detected among a participant, it will be very difficult to find and notify those who may have been exposed."These traditional Halloween celebrations are not advised, and large gatherings are not allowed, under state or local health guidance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798

Gavin Newsom reversed a parole board's decision to release a 59-year-old man who was a teenage gang member when he killed a San Diego police officer in 1978, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.Jesus Cecena was convicted of killing Officer Archie Buggs, 30, who was shot four times after he stopped a car driven by Cecena in the Skyline neighborhood.Cecena, then 17, fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point-blank range.Cecena, who is serving a life sentence, was granted parole in June, a decision that was heavily criticized by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.Newsom reversed the parole board's decision on Monday, marking the second time he has reversed a parole grant for Cecena. Former Gov. Jerry Brown also reversed parole grants for Cecena in 2014, 2016 and 2017.Newsom cited Cecena's gang motivations as a major factor in his decision."Mr. Cecena still is unwilling to acknowledge the underlying or causative factors that are in evidence, specifically that he belonged to a gang where killing a peace officer was seen as an ultimate goal, that a more senior and respected gang member handed him a firearm so he could kill Officer Buggs, and that killing Officer Buggs was a way for Mr. Cecena to gain more respect and power within his gang," Newsom wrote. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, announced the formation of a panel of servicemembers, veterans, and other community leaders who will work together on recommendations to name either an Oceanside or San Diego Department of Veterans Affairs facility after a woman veteran.The VA Facility Dedication Advisory Panel will compile a report on notable women veterans with ties to the region who are worthy of the honor. Currently, there are no VA facilities in the United States that are named after women veterans, and neither the San Diego VA Medical Center nor the Oceanside VA Clinic are named after an individual.The panel is led by Army Veteran and Carlsbad resident Karin Brennan."Throughout our nation's history, women have served and sacrificed for our freedom just like men, but have often gone without the recognition they deserve," Levin said."It is past time to rectify that injustice and live up to our responsibility to honor all veterans, including women. It's disappointing that not a single VA facility in the country is named after a woman veteran, but we can change that here in our district."In September 2020, the VA released the 2020 Report of its Advisory Committee on Women Veterans. His work is considered "3D industrial," and uses items like drywall screws, dog tags and golf tees.The San Diego Blood Bank will have its mobile tent outside the Midway Museum. Donors will receive one ticket for entry into the museum.
