SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health officials are asking residents, schools, and businesses to prepare for the novel coronavirus. In a message posted on County News Center Thursday, the county urged people to prepare “for a potential outbreak” of the virus. “It’s important for everyone to educate themselves and their family and be prepared in case the new coronavirus makes its way to San Diego County,” said Chairman Greg Cox, County Board of Supervisors. “It’s also important for people not to panic as the risk for this new virus and the disease that it causes continues to be low.”RELATED: San Diego County AT&T store worker's initial coronavirus test comes back positiveBelow is list of what health officials say you can do to prepare: Store a two-week supply of food, beverages and water, including food for family pets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded. But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. They're also encouraging people to go to the Adams Recreation Advisory Group meeting on October 22 to voice their concerns. The meeting is at 6 pm, at the Adams Recreation Center (3491 Adams Avenue). 1685

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Efforts to streamline the construction of a massive transportation hub in the Midway District and update the Navy's Old Town campus have been approved by the state.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2731 this week, which will allow the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to quicken the environmental review process in order to build a transit hub connecting to San Diego International Airport and redevelop the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) Old Town campus site, should the Navy partner with SANDAG.The bill, introduced by California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria and Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), will allow SANDAG to use the Navy's environmental document as the basis of its California Environmental Quality Act document and requires most legal actions over the project to be resolved in 270 days.RELATED: Mayor Faulconer, Acting Navy Sec. agree to make NAVWAR facility a transit hubThe bill will also require the transit hub to meet high environmental benchmarks, such as LEED Gold certification, reducing vehicle miles by 25%, and be greenhouse gas neutral in exchange for the streamlined environmental process."This bill represents a unique opportunity to protect the existing 5,000 Navy jobs from relocation, create a 21st-century transportation system in San Diego, and provide desperately needed economic stimulus to our local economy in the wake of COVID-19," said Gloria. "This project has the potential to generate at least 16,000 jobs and provide housing for up to 27,000 residents – both of which we know are desperately needed. I want to thank Governor Newsom for allowing our region to take advantage of this potential partnership."RELATED: Officials, Navy sign pact on potential 'Grand Central Station' for San DiegoAtkins added, "from construction of redeveloped NAVWAR facilities to building and operating a mobility hub to better connect San Diegans and visitors with a direct transit connection to the San Diego International Airport, these are critical projects for our communities and will have a positive fiscal impact on our region for years to come."Until the bill goes into effect, the Navy will continue to complete its environmental review set to be done by early 2021.The bill will take effect starting Jan. 1, 2021.Last January, SANDAG and the Navy signed a pact to explore options to redevelop the site. 2418

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of men in high heels strutted through downtown San Diego on Saturday morning to support victims of domestic violence. The 11th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event started with the mile walk and ended with a family festival featuring face painting, live music and more.“It is a lighthearted way to bring awareness to domestic violence,” said Heather Frinlay, the Chief Operating Officer of the YWCA of San Diego County. The morning of family fun raised money for programs that provide victims of domestic violence resources like housing, counseling, and legal aid.“This is not a private issue; this is a community issue,” said Frinlay. “We still have one in four women, and now one in seven men experiencing domestic violence in their lifetimes.”San Diego County reported more than 17,000 incidents of domestic violence in 2017. 871
