BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China will raise gasoline and diesel prices both by 480 yuan (70.28 U.S. dollars) per tonne from Tuesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced on its website Monday.     The benchmark price of gasoline will be 7,100 yuan a tonne and that of diesel 6,360 yuan a tonne, according to the NDRC.     The retail price of gasoline will climb by 0.36 yuan per liter and that of diesel will rise by 0.41 yuan per liter.     The country adopted a new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect on Jan. 1.     Under the pricing mechanism, the NDRC will consider changing the benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price changes more than four percent over 22 straight work days. The price hike can help relieve domestic refiners' pressure from soaring oil refining cost," said Wang Jing, an analyst on petrochemical sector with Orient Securities Company Limited.     The price hike was aimed to protect oil refiners' interests, ensure market supply and help lead rational consumption to promote energy-saving and emission reduction, the NDRC said.     The NDRC would take active measures to help reduce pressure brought to sectors like transportation, the NDRC said.     International crude oil price might continue to rise within this year as demand would continue to grow amid global economic recovery, Wang said.

SIEM REAP, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here with Cambodia's deputy prime minister on Sunday and voiced China's willingness to push for a higher-level relations with the country.     During the meeting, Xi said bilateral friendship could date back to ancient times and both sides have maintained close contacts. SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday that Shanghai and Chicago can learn from each other especially on clean energy.     He made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese students at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. It is his first trip to China since taking office in January.     "It's a terrific opportunity for us to learn from each other," he said.     "In the United States we are learning how to develop buildings that use much less energy and that are much more energy-efficient. I noticed in Shanghai many new buildings are growing up. It's important to incorporate these new technologies so that each building is energy-efficient when it comes to lighting, when it comes to heating," he said.     Clean energy issue is going to be a major focus in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, he said.     Shanghai and Chicago have been sister cities since 1985.

BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's exchange rate regulator said Tuesday it would work to promote balance of payment next year by stabilizing exports while expanding imports.     The promotion of balance of payment should be the fundamental of the work in 2010 in order to safeguard the nation's economic and financial security, said Yi Gang, head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE).     He said SAFE would continue to diversify the investment of foreign reserves, and ensure the safety, liquidity and the value of the mounting assets, which have ballooned to more than 2 trillion U.S. dollars.     The authority would also step up supervision of the cross-border money flow to protect national financial safety, he said.     Yi also noted SAFE would seek chances to push forward reforms in key areas and links of the foreign exchange management but didn't elaborate.
