Yvonne Staples, one of the four members of the famed gospel and R&B group the Staples Singers, died on Tuesday at the age of 80, a family spokesperson confirmed to NPR. A cause of death has not been announced. The Staples Singers had several No. 1 hits in the 1970s, including "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again." The group comprised of Yvonne Staples, and sisters Mavis and Cleotha and brother Pervis. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. You’ve probably noticed new electronic payment screens when purchasing coffee or other items at a counter. With the new systems, do customers end up tipping more?  An automatic tipping system called Toast says since 2017, quick service restaurants using their system have received tips on nearly 60 percent of credit card orders, compared to 28 percent previously.    "The basic idea is to make it very easy for you, very convenient for you, and create an expectation that this is a norm,” says Dr. Kevin Masters, a professor at CU Denver. “And this is what’s usually done."   Dr. Masters says the psychology behind the process is to cause stress for customers, which makes them tip no matter how much they decide.   "These ones where you are at a coffee shop or taxi places like that, you're given this automatic tip, especially if there is a line behind you there is a pressure," he says.   If you think you're the only one who feels awkward in this situation, you're not alone. Nathan, who works as a barista, says the feeling is mutual. But he does believe he gets tipped more with automatic tipping screens.    Dr. Master's says whether or not you tip, it's all psychological with the pressure you feel."Most of us, I think, would rather just get it over with,” he says. “So, if it costs me a few more cents on this cup of coffee, [no] big deal."    1427

With the Republican Party picking up its national convention and moving it to Jacksonville next month, the local sheriff says his county isn’t ready to host such a massive event.The event was moved out of Charlotte after President Donald Trump and Republicans could not receive assurances from North Carolina that the convention could be held without social distancing restrictions.Traditionally, political conventions are massive undertakings for law enforcement agencies. While security at the convention itself is generally handled at the federal level, thousands of officers help secure the area around the venue.When the GOP convention was held in Cleveland in 2016, Cleveland Police had backup from agencies across the US. The officers provided security at protests, as well as surrounding events attended by delegates and surrogates.But with the event moving to Jacksonville on short notice, plans that take months to come together haven’t had a chance to crystalize."With less than 40 days until the expected Republican National Convention is slated to arrive in Jacksonville, I am compelled to express my significant concerns with the viability of this event,” Sheriff Mike Williams said on Monday. “It is my sole responsibility to provide safety, security for our city and more importantly for the citizens who I serve. So, with a growing list of challenges, be it financial, with communication, with the timeline, I cannot say with confidence that this event or our community will not be at risk."This year’s convention is expected to be scaled back from those in the past due to coronavirus concerns. Yemen's air force on Saturday targeted an airport in Saudi Arabia's capital with a ballistic missile, according to Yemen's Houthi-controlled Defense Ministry.But the missile was intercepted over northeast Riyadh, the Saudi Ministry of Defense said in a statement carried on government-backed Al-Arabiya television.Yemen's Defense Ministry said the missile attack "shook the Saudi capital" and the operation was successful. With ventilators hard to find amid the spread of the coronavirus, families across the world worked together to find a ventilator for a child in Ecuador. Wilson, at age 18 months, is at an age one half of children with Centronuclear Myopathy don't get to see."At the beginning, they didn’t get any diagnosis, it was 5 months until they got the diagnosis. The first months it was very uncertain what was going to happen. They had no idea and because of the disease is very, very uncommon and rare, the doctor had no idea," said Jen Bilbao, translator for the family."These children are born very weak, a majority of them do not breathe spontaneously on their own. They cannot eat orally, cannot sit up on their own," said Alison Frase, Joshua Frase Foundation cofounder.That means they need a ventilator, something that was in short supply here in the U.S. just a few weeks ago, but is nearly impossible to find in Ecuador. Frase's son, Joshua, was born with Myotubular Myopathy in 1995. He passed away 15 years later. And in his death, Alison started the Joshua Frase Foundation and an equipment exchange program."That’s the first family we have in Ecuador because normally the children there with this kind of diseases, unfortunately they don’t survive because there is not equipment," said Bilbao. "It’s very, very hard for them to go home so there’s little that they can do for them."Bilbao used to live in Ecuador. Now, she’s in Germany. She started CNM – Together Strong!, an association that helps families with centronuclear myopathies in Germany after her son was born with Myotubular Myopathy. Wilson’s parents got ahold of her after finding information online in Spanish — asking for help finding a ventilator so they could bring Wilson home."She was very desperate because she thought she was going to be at the hospital her whole life," Bilbao said, translating for Wilson's mom.Bilbao reached out to Frase to see if there was anything she could do to help."I was scrambling making posts on our private groups looking for the equipment to piecemeal this ventilator together," said Frase. "I knew I had a ventilator from, unfortunately, a child, actually a young man, that had passed this year, and I reached out to that mom, and she said absolutely you can have it."The ventilator came from a family in Utah, the plug, connectors, and other parts from another family in Utah, and the humidifier from a family in Texas. They were shipped to Bilbao’s brother who still lives in Ecuador to take to the family."We couldn’t ship it to the hospital because they were feeling that it’s going to get lost at the hospital. Then where they live there’s no post office because they don’t live in the city they live outside the city, it’s very hard for the post to get packages to them," said Bilbao.For Wilson’s parents, this gift is more than just a medical device."They felt really like they could breathe again. So it was not only a breath for their child, but a breath for them because they didn’t know what to do. And to know that somebody was going to help, it was very peaceful," said Bilbao. 3107
