ABBOTT PARK, Ill. – As the coronavirus continues to spread and the need for more testing grows with it, labs across the U.S. are racing to get approval for their tests for COVID-19. The company Abbott is one of them. “Abbott was able to get an emergency use authorization for a new test, molecular test for the SARS-coronavirus-2,” said John Hackett, Jr., the Divisional Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott. Researchers inside their Illinois lab created a test that can be used with the company’s testing system, called “m2000 RealTime.” That’s key because the company says that system is already widely available in hospitals and testing labs around the country. “These are in hospitals and academic centers and this is where the test volume is,” Hackett said. The speed in regulatory approval from the FDA for the test was unprecedented. The company said that, normally, it can take several years to get a test approved; this one happened in a matter of weeks. Their testing system can run through 470 patient tests per day. “This is a massive impact when you think about trying to get results back to the physicians,” Hackett said. “This is actionable information - either a person's infected or they're not.” About 150,000 tests are now on their way to hospitals and labs in 18 states – including New York, California and Washington – some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. The company plans to be producing a million tests a week by the end of this month. Other companies, including those in California and Texas, have similar authorizations from the FDA and are hoping to provide more tests. “The key thing here is to get to a point where we can change the trajectory, reduce the trajectory, reduce the number of new infections that are occurring,” Hackett said.It’s a change they hope might put a dent in the coronavirus pandemic. 1872

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday the state's formula that will determine which school districts can reopen to students in September.The formula will be implemented between August 1 and August 7, based on COVID-19 data in each region. Schools in regions in Phase Four of their reopening at that time will be able to reopen to students if the region's daily infection rate remains 5% or lower over a 14-day average.After August 1, schools will close if their regional infection rate is greater than 9% over a seven-day average.Once reopening, schools must follow guidelines specific to their districts. The New York State Health Department has released its own guidelines, which will be used by districts to develop plans.The health department's guidelines include masks and PPE whenever students or staff cannot maintain social distancing (six feet of separation). JOSHUA TREE, Cali. – Scientists say climate change could kill off California’s iconic Joshua trees completely. “The future for Joshua trees might be a little bleak and we know that,” said University of California Riverside biologist Lynn Sweet, Ph.D. Sweet says these trees, which have been on the planet for more than 2.5 million years, could soon be extinct due to warming weather. Her team of scientists released a new study showing the impacts of climate change on California’s high desert -- saying as the Earth gets hotter and gets less rain, it will be harder for these trees to survive. “Joshua trees need really special conditions in order to germinate and grow,” Sweet said. “And those conditions might happen less and less frequently.” Sweet predicts Joshua trees could be extinct within the next 50 years. “We’re looking at the future of maybe keeping 20 percent of the Joshua trees if we really get our acts together,” she said. “And we’re looking at less than 1 percent of Joshua tree habitat remaining in the park if we don’t do something about climate change.” Some visitors say they are already seeing the change. “The Joshua trees don’t look happy,” tourist Jean Blattner said. “They seem to be in the park area suffering.” Blattner has been visiting Joshua Tree National Park for the past 30 years and says the conditions are getting worse. “They’re not as full; they don’t seem to have the glisten that they used to when the sun shined on them before,” she said. Not everyone, however, everyone is buying it. “Even though it looks a little dry it’s still full of life,” said Nelson Perez, who has lived in Joshua Tree for 20 years. Perez supports science but doesn’t believe that these trees could be completely wiped off the planet by the end of the century. “I don’t think it’s to an extent that a lot of the climate changers beliefs are so I’m kind of in the middle,” he said. Sweet, however, says science supports her findings and encourages people to think about how their carbon footprint impacts the environment. “So, the degree to which the Joshua Tree is in trouble is really up to us,” she said. “If we can make a difference, we can make a difference for these trees.” 2219

Many parents are wondering how schools could look different if they reopen in the fall. The Pima County, Arizona, superintendent toured a charter school today. The principal of Da Vinci Tree Academy invited Dustin Williams to look at a preliminary model that follows CDC guidelines. Williams says, “I saw the partitions up and I said, Whoa. I haven't seen a model like that. This is one of the first models I've seen in class.
