PARIS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The efforts made by China on its course of development has made it a successful example for other emerging countries, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's chief said to Xinhua in an exclusive interview here on Tuesday, four days before her trip to China and the Shanghai Expo. The UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova will pay a working visit to Shanghai and Beijing from May 16, during which she will have a two-day stop for the Shanghai Expo, which has opened doors to the public on May 1."We've seen the efforts of China, which are spectacular in all areas of development ... it also shows that with political will, with the efforts of an entire people to focus on development, it is possible to overcome certain difficulties," she said. She praised China's "very impressive" development and said China should also share its experience with other developing countries because it "is a good example that can bring millions of people out of poverty by adapting to a globalized world."Additionally, she encouraged China to engage more into UNESCO affairs in Africa and in Asia on educational domain. As to the Shanghai Expo, the UNESCO has set up its own pavilion at the Expo site and Bokova herself has personally planned diversified activities, lectures and conversations at the pavilion to provide platforms for idea exchanges with Chinese people and foreign visitors, the veteran diplomat told Xinhua. The Shanghai World Expo "gives an opportunity for all countries and all organizations to make a sort of communication on their values and their activities," she said, seeing it "a great event for China and for the entire international community."Bokova is expected to launch a UN report on cultural diversity at the UNESCO pavilion, which is specially designed to focus on material and immaterial cultural heritages, education issues and scientific topics including climate change, water management and etc.She spoke highly of the great effort made by the Chinese authorities to organize the World Expo in Shanghai."I know that the 'motto' of this exhibition is about urban ( Better City, Better Life). We already know that 60 percent of the world population live in cities, the figure rises almost all the time. Some projections say that in fifty years there will be 80 percent of the world population live in cities," she indicated.According to the director general, the UNESCO is seeking answers through its experiences to some difficult issues that are associated with globalization and interconnectability of the world in the fields of culture, science and especially the education. She underlined that education and personnel training was the key factor to make a nation "competitive" and have "sustainable development."At last, the UNESCO chief issued a friendly message to China and Chinese people, saying China is a very old nation "with ancient roots very deep into all the culture of humans" and it meanwhile "shows the dynamism and creativity, which are examples for all the world.""I think China has proved that there are no limits, there is no problem that can not be overcome," she concluded.

TASHKENT, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Saturday at the end of visits to Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan that China and the three nations have pledged closer cooperation in trade, energy and infrastructure.Yang described the visits as "fruitful," saying he and leaders of the three nations held in-depth discussion about how to step up pragmatic cooperation."Broad consensus has been reached," Yang said in a joint interview with Xinhua, China Central Television and China Radio International."The four countries agreed that it is necessary to look into new ways of cooperation, especially in trade and economy," Yang said.China and the three countries pledged to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in telecommunication, energy, science and technology and infrastructure construction, he said. They also decided to promote cultural, humanitarian and youth exchanges, and deepen mutual understanding, Yang said."The four nations are ready to work together to safeguard world and regional peace, stability and development," Yang said.To that end, the foreign minister said, the countries pledged to enhance consultation and coordination in major international and regional affairs. They also pledged, he said, to strengthen cooperation within the frameworks of the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the China-Arab Cooperation Forum and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum. The leaders of Tunisia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan expressed willingness to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, high-level contacts and political mutual trust with China, Yang said. The three states said they valued their friendships with China and would deal with their relationships with China from a strategic and long-term perspective, Yang said. The foreign minister visited Tunisia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan from May 17-22 as a guest of his counterparts in the three nations. He also attended a Council of Foreign Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Saturday in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.Yang said the foreign ministers meeting was mainly aimed at making sure the SOC members are politically prepared for the bloc's Tashkent summit in June.During the meeting, the SOO members agreed that they would steadfastly implement all of the important consensus concerning the SCO's development reached by their leaders, he said. Moreover, they should effectively deal with constantly emerging threats and challenges so as to defend the fundamental interests of the bloc and its members, and help the bloc play a bigger role in promoting regional peace, stability and development, Yang said.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The energy intensity of China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises fell close to government targets from 2005 to 2009, a senior SOE administrator said Monday. The level of energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of output value was down 15.1 percent over the five-year period, said Li Rongrong, director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).Combined investment in energy-efficient and emissions reduction projects by centrally-administrated SOEs totaled 87.84 billion yuan (12.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2009, said Li.This helped reduce sulfur dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of output value by 36.8 percent and chemical oxygen demand by 33 percent compared with 2005 levels, said Li.Enterprises executives who performed poorly in promoting energy conservation and emissions reductions, would be held for responsible by the SASAC, said Li.But he did not explain what would be considered a "poor" performance nor what penalties would be enforced.Under China's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010), the centrally-administered SOEs are expected to reduce energy intensity by 20 percent by the end of 2010 from 2005.By the end of 2009, China had 131 centrally-administered SOEs, many of them leading companies in highly polluting industries, including petrochemicals, steel, power generation, and non-ferrous metals industries.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese vaccine makers Thursday confirmed they have shut down operations after their rabies vaccines were found to be substandard. The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) announced in December that a total of 215,800 units of rabies vaccines made by Jiangsu Ealong Biotech Co. and Hebei Bioforwell Co. from July to October 2008 had quality problems. The agency had ordered the two companies to halt production and sales. The confirmation came after media reports saying Ealong Biotech had resumed production and seven executives had been detained. Reports said the company had mixed an additive with the vaccine to reduce costs, leaving as many as 1 million people affected nationwide. Some local newspapers even reported that deaths or illness were likely caused by the faulty vaccines.Yan Jiangying, the SFDA spokesman, said the SFDA was yet to release investigation results as the probe was still underway. But Yan said people needed several injections to build up immunity as the 180,000 units of vaccines made by Ealong Biotech were not as effective as required by the drug watchdog.Liu Wu, general manager of Ealong Biotech, said the faulty vaccines may not provide protection against rabies as they were not up to national standards. But Liu said "We have not received any reports on adverse reactions in people receiving rabies vaccine shots."Liu also denied there were 1 million people affected, saying each person should receive five injections, or one unit, rather than receive one injection of each unit. The company had not produced or sold even one dose of rabies vaccine since Nov. 30, Liu told Xinhua. It also halted production of the A/H1N1 flu vaccine in February when the quality permit expired, he said.Liu also denied that seven company executives had been arrested and that they had put an additive in the vaccines.Ealong Biotech is the nation's fourth-largest rabies vaccine maker with a market share of 11 percent. It took orders from the Chinese government for 6.3 million doses of A/H1N1 flu vaccines in 2009, ranking third nationwide.Wang Kejing, deputy director of the food and drug administration in Sanhe city, where Hebei Bioforwell Co. is located, said the company had not sold even one dose of vaccine since April last year.Hebei Bioforwell Co., which only produced rabies vaccines, had been shut down for rectification. It said earlier that all the faulty rabies vaccines had been used, but they had received no reports of adverse reactions. In the northern Shanxi province, almost 100 children had died or fell ill after taking shots of vaccines for encephalitis, hepatitis B and rabies, the Beijing-based China Economic Times reported on March 17.The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the case after media exposure.
