SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft could shut down in California as early as Friday due to a judge's ruling ordering the companies to classify their drivers as employees, not contractors. Uber and Lyft have warned their users and drivers about the possible shutdown. Both companies have appealed the ruling. The issue stems from Assembly Bill 5, a law that classifies contractors as employees, giving them the right to unionize, have access to minimum wage, overtime, paid sick leave and workers compensation benefits. Some Uber and Lyft drivers are in favor of AB5, but many others say they would like to continue working as independent contractors because of the flexibility the job allows them. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials Monday echoed Governor Gavin Newsom’s demand to close more businesses as coronavirus intensifies.The state announced Monday that it was closing indoor operations for places of worship, restaurants, wineries, movie theatres and family entertainment, zoos, museums, cardrooms, fitness centers, some offices, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls. All bars were also ordered to close."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. The new order takes effect in San Diego at midnight Wednesday morning. The announcement comes as 419 more people throughout the county tested positive for coronavirus Monday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rep. Duncan Hunter's opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, spoke out Tuesday about the indictment against the congressman. “Now is the time to put country over party,” Campa said in a brief video posted on YouTube. Campa continued by adding that Hunter "is in it for himself."
