SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy.The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is pleading for their father back after they say officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended him on June 20. Their father is expected in court on July 18. Gilberto Mayorga's children say it's hard to imagine life separated from him. "He's been here's since he was 17, 16. All he knows is San Diego. All he knows being here," his daughter, Eugenia Mayorga said. They say their father met their mother and started their family. He was deported but quickly came back so he could help their mother, who was struggling to support their family. "As soon as he came back, I remember having a roof over our heads," his daughter Bridgette Rembao, said. "I feel like the only crime he made was to come back and financially support us." ICE painted a different picture of Mayorga. ICE officials say he had previously been removed from the country five times. He served 100 days in federal prison for illegally entering the country. They say he has two felony criminal convictions for drug offenses and was sentenced to more than than five months in jail. He was also convicted of two other misdemeanors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with a death at a Rancho Pe?asquitos home stemming from a reported fight at the residence.San Diego police said officers were called to a home in the 12500 block of Darkwood Rd. in Rancho Penasquitos just before 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in response to a reported fight at the house.According to police, a man called 911 to report his 23-year-old son, Wyatt Austin Lane, had been in a fight with a guest at their home earlier in the day.Regarding the fight, the father reported that his son told him “the guest had lost and never regained consciousness,” according to police.Officers arrived to find a deceased male inside a bedroom with “apparent trauma to his body,” police said. The victim was not immediately identified.Lane was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.SDPD Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the incident. 921

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported.
