The used vehicle market is seeing an “unseasonal sharp uptick due to unique market conditions” because of the coronavirus pandemic.This also means those with a used car sitting around could get top dollar for a trade-in or sale.Edmunds, which has been tracking automotive trends since the 60s, says the average used car listing price was 8 more in July than in June. Large trucks had the biggest one-month jump, with listing prices ,301 more in July than in June.Meanwhile, trade-ins are, on average, seeing 16.4 percent more value in July compared to June. And those used vehicles are not sticking around on the lots for long. In June, it was taking an average of 44 days to turn around a used car, and in July, it was down to 38 days. This is the steepest one-month decline in Edmunds history of keeping records."It's a seller's market right now. Although used vehicles continue to offer significant discounts compared to new, used-car shoppers will find themselves in the unusual position where they might not have as much negotiation power because demand is so high and dealers will be less inclined to be flexible," said Ivan Drury, Edmunds' senior manager of insights in a release from the company."If you're in the market for a used car, what you see in terms of pricing is likely what you're going to get, so do your research and be prepared to act quickly if you have your heart set on a vehicle."The reason behind the sharp increase in demand for used vehicles is for a variety of pandemic-related causes, says Drury.Consumers are being more cost-conscious right now as unemployment is high, interest rates and offers from dealers are favorable for car buying, and inventory has been “severely limited on the new side.”Automakers closed their factories for several weeks earlier this year as states issued stay-at-home orders to control the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the drugs that are the most addicted drugs of abuse tend to be incredibly fast on and fast off.” Gallegos uses her phone throughout the entire day. She’s guilty of checking her phone, even if it never goes off. But, how do you know you’re addicted to your smartphone?Dr. Fehling says to look out for signs like you are “on your phone all the time getting into arguments with your spouse, getting into fights with your family, and everyone is asking why can’t you be more engaged or pay more attention to them instead of being distracted by these mobile devices.”If these situations aren’t happening in your life, Dr. Fehling says symptoms come along with addiction too. For example, “anxiety, symptoms of depression or sadness, irritability or sleep problems. If you get up at night needing to check your phone.”If you are addicted to your phone and are looking to disconnect without having major withdrawals, Dr. Fehling says there are simple tasks you can do to help. “When you get into your car put your phone inside your glove compartment. You can’t actually look at it, you are not drawn to it. When you plug in your phone at night, put it on a different floor of your house.”It’s best to set concrete boundaries for yourself and your phone usage. It will happen through September 8.Delta and Southwest are blocking middle seats through the end of September. But other major airlines, including United and American, say they'll be filling flights.An MIT professor Arnold Barnett is laying out what your risk is of catching the coronavirus if the middle seat is filled.Barnett looked at research on the transmission of the virus and the number of cases. He assumed everyone would have a mask and that the mask is 82% effective. He found 1 in 4,300 is your risk of getting COVID-19 on a full plane. It's 1 in 7,700 if the airline keeps the middle seats open.“The takeaway is there is a difference,” said Barnett. “I think that it is statistically safer if the middle seat is kept open. The difference is measurable and perceptible, and the question then is if the risk is incredibly low, who cares if it gets cut in half. Then the issue is do people really think this level of risk is incredibly low and individuals will have to make that judgment.”The probabilities are based on numbers from late June. With more new cases, it’s likely there is a greater chance now.Barnett doesn't agree with airline arguments that even if they don't fill the middle seat, passengers still won't be 6 feet away from each other.“They seem to say, look if you're within 6 feet, it doesn't matter if it's 1 foot or 5 feet, you're the same level of risk,” said Barnett. “This bears no relationship to the literature or to physics. I mean the closer you are statistically, the greater is the risk.”Barnett is submitting his research this week to be peer reviewed, but says he wanted to make it available publicly before then, so people could have the information.Lawmakers, passengers and flight crew unions have called on the FAA to set policies for containing the virus.The government says it is advising the airlines that even if it's not passing new regulations.Airlines for America, which represents the major carriers, says mandates aren't necessary, because airlines have already taken extraordinary measures. 2148
