SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego will light up landmarks this week in honor of the 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement.San Diego's convention center Sails Pavilion and Balboa Park's California Tower will be illuminated in purple and gold to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment starting Monday until Friday."This week San Diego will be illuminated in colorful lights to celebrate the single largest expansion of voting rights in American history," Mayor Kevin L. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's cost of living runs more than ,500 a month, making it one of the worst monthly hits in the country's biggest cities, according to a new study.San Diego's cost of living ranked 64th out of the study's 75 most populous U.S. cities, according to Move.org. Average monthly costs in America's Finest City came in at about ,665, the study revealed.In San Diego, prices were broken down by rent for a one-bedroom apartment, utilities, internet, gasoline, and groceries for one month:Rent: ,970.93Utilities: 1.66Internet: .05Gasoline: 6.15Groceries: 2.07Prices were pulled from Numbeo's updated estimates in June 2019.Charting as the absolute worst cities for cost of living where San Francisco (,210.60 a month), New York City (,956.11 a month), and San Jose, Calif. (,289.07 a month.) Half of the study's 10 worst cities were located in California.On the other end of the spectrum, El Paso, Texas, ranked best with a monthly cost of living of ,182.96, followed by Lincoln, Neb. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely. Substitute teachers will also be trained to give online lessons if they do need to step in.The California Department of Public Health released guidelines and recommendations for schools reopening for in-person learning.According to the department, two-week closures will be put in place if at least 5 percent of the total number of teachers, students, or staff test positive in a classroom or school, or 25 percent of a district’s population tests positive. 2126

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several people were hospitalized after they reportedly fell ill at a Sorrento Valley pharmaceutical company.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to 6769 Mesa Ridge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a 60-year-old man was passed out outside the business, Inovio Pharmaceuticals.Bystanders reportedly began CPR and used a defibrillator on the man.Crews say that additional people were transported after falling ill. In all, two people transported themselves to Scripps Memorial Hospital while two others were transported by emergency crews.Their conditions are not known at this time.SDFD said they believe the victims became sick after eating food brought in by an employee.  727

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State students will be able to learn all about Latinx representation in media through the life of the "Queen of Tejano."On what would have been the famed superstar's 48th birthday, SDSU's School of Journalism and Media Studies will offer a course dedicated to the late Selena Quintanilla Perez next spring called, "Selena and Latinx Media Representation."Students will be able to register for the class starting on Nov. 1, 2019.RELATED: Free textbook program saves Grossmont College students thousandsThe course will explore and deconstruct Latinx identities and socio-cultural representations through Selena's music, career, and influence, according to Nathian Rodriquez, assistant professor of digital media studies.“Students also need access to content in media landscapes to better understand the relationship between mediated representations and Latinx identity formation and maintenance,” Rodriguez said. “Speaking about these issues through the life of a well-known and visible celebrity allows students to utilize both pop culture and Latinx culture to deconstruct and interrogate the significance and broader meaning of minority-based mediated content.”Selena released 10 albums throughout her career, winning several awards including Tejano Music Awards, Billboard Latin Music Awards, and a Grammy.
