Pink ice is causing the scientific community some concern. The Presena Glacier in northern Italy appears pink because of algae on it, which scientists say could speed up melting of the ice.The Presena Glacier is in the Alps, just south of Italy’s border with Switzerland. While there is debate about where the algae came from, Biagio Di Mauro of Italy’s National Research Council told The Guardian the pink snow observed on parts of the Presena glacier is likely caused by the same plant found in Greenland. 515

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman was arrested for child abuse on Sunday after deputies say she placed a 3-year-old girl unbuckled in the front seat of her vehicle and slammed on the brakes, sending the child into the windshield. Officials say that Justine Olesky, 33, was in a physical altercation with her boyfriend while the child was standing next to her. Once the boyfriend left, Olesky picked up the child and placed her in the front passenger seat without a seatbelt or car seat, according to the arrest affidavit.Pinellas County deputies say that the child is 3-years-old and weighs approximately 35 pounds.Deputies say that Olesky then proceeded after her boyfriend and accelerated to high speeds in a residential neighborhood. A witness saw the child in the front seat of the vehicle when they say Olesky was driving roughly 90 mph through the neighborhood. Once she saw her boyfriend, deputies say she slammed on her brakes causing the child to be ejected forward. This caused the child's head to strike the windshield at such a high force it shattered the windshield roughly 20 inches in diameter.Deputies say that blonde strands of hair were left in the glass from the child. According to the arrest affidavit, Olesky did not appear to be concerned for the child and continued to talk about her boyfriend even when deputies brought up the child's safety. Olesky was arrested for child abuse and domestic battery.Post Miranda, deputies say that Olesky told law enforcement that she does not remember and denies the incident. She did say that the window was not shattered prior to the incident, according to the arrest affidavit.The child was transported to the hospital. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was taken into custody in East San Diego County on suspicion of smuggling methamphetamine with her 6-year-old son in her car, U.S. Border Patrol Agents said Wednesday. The arrest happened about 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Interstate 8 checkpoint in Pine Valley. Agents pulled over the 25-year-old woman who was driving a 1999 Ford Expedition. A K-9 alerted agents to the SUV’s rear door, where they found 65 bundles of crystal meth in the rear spare tire, officials said. The woman, a Mexican national, was arrested. Her son is now in the care of Child Protective Services. Agents said the drugs had a street value of 9,352. 666

PALA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A brush fire erupted in the north San Diego County community of Pauma Valley Tuesday afternoon, sending a plume of thick, white smoke into the atmosphere.The fire broke out on the 13800 block of Highway 76 near Pala Road northeast of Escondido around 2:50 p.m. According to Cal Fire, the flames have scorched at least 50 acres.Cal Fire sent an aircraft to help fight the fire. No structures were threatened in the fire. Winds in the area Tuesday could reach 14 miles per hour before winding down later this evening. The humidity, which is currently at 50 percent, should help firefighters fight the blaze. The fire is now 15 percent contained.  740

Paul Manafort and Rick Gates' case has added a new criminal charge or charges as of Wednesday, though whether the action is additional grand-jury approved indictments or indicates a coming a plea agreement remains a mystery.A record-keeping book in the federal courthouse in Washington included a new sealed filing in Manafort and Gates' case, which was opened in late October when the former Trump campaign advisers pleaded not guilty to money laundering and failure to properly disclose their foreign lobbying work. The filing contained no additional information.The filing could indicate additional indictments in the case, or it could be a type of charge called a criminal information, which would indicate an agreement between prosecutors and a defendant.Prosecutors on Manafort's case said on Friday they found evidence of bank fraud and related conspiracies, for which Manafort had not been charged.CNN has also reported that Gates has spoken to prosecutors about his case and has been negotiating a plea deal for more than a month. It's still unclear this week whether he is closer to finalizing an agreement.
