(KGTV) - A grieving dog owner says a routine surgery turned deadly after his dog suffered burns during a brief stay.In early May, John San Filippo brought 11-year-old Sofia, a Boxer mix, to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for knee surgery."Dropped her off in the morning and picked up her up in the afternoon. She was doing great," said San Filippo.Six days after the surgery, San Filippo found several oozing sores on her right side. The vet told him the electric blanket used to warm Sofia had somehow burned her. "I was stunned, but at that point, it was just three little spots," said San Filippo.Within weeks, the full extent of the burns emerged: 3rd- and 4th-degree burns on over 40% of her body. Sofia developed sepsis and pneumonia, before she died in early June."Just broke down crying ... brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued," said San Filippo. San Filippo has filed a complaint with the State Veterinary Medical Board and wants the business shut down.Bastet Veterinary Hospital released the following statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia'a family for their loss."Experts suggest asking your veterinarian about how they warm animals during anesthesia. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

(KGTV) -- Students in the Grossmont Union High School District will head back to class on Monday, Aug. 10, but the start of the new school year comes with a number of changes.For starters, all classes will be online because of the coronavirus pandemic.The district will also have new leadership, as Superintendent Theresa Kemper takes over."We have a plan that's scalable and flexible," Kemper told ABC 10News.Kemper took over as the superintendent on July 1 after Tim Glover left the position. Kemper has been with the district for nearly 25 years, with stints as an assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent.Since May, Kemper has been leading the effort to create a back to school plan for this fall amidst the pandemic."We knew it was not entirely in our control which is exactly why we created the plan the way we did," she said. "We're committed to moving into it slowly and carefully and not making mistakes as we go."According to their "Roadmap for Reopening," GUHSD will start the 2020-21 school year entirely online, complying with state and county health guidelines that say schools cannot return to in-person learning until San Diego County has been off the state coronavirus watch-list for 14 days.The full plan calls for five levels of reopening that gradually increase the number of students on campus. Level 2 allows for 25% capacity and Level 3 is 50%; Level 4 is 100% capacity, with some limited online learning. Level 5 is a return to full, in-person school.Kemper said the goal is to ease teachers and students back into the classroom, and allow for flexibility as things change."It's been a long time since teachers and students have been in classrooms together," she said. "So, we want to ease them into the process and make sure conditions are still holding for them to all be there."In response to the plan, the Grossmont Education Association, which represents the teachers in the district, released a statement on their Facebook page on July 2. It says, in part, that the changes for the coming school year "reflect our ongoing commitment to innovation and learning for all students."The statement concludes by saying, "While there are many, many other issues and details that still need to be determined, we are excited to move forward with our plans to prepare to have students on campus this fall."Teachers, meanwhile, spent the summer training and adapting their lesson plans to what Kemper calls "distance learning 2.0.""It's more interactive," she explained. "We'll have daily interaction with students and teachers. (KGTV) -- A rally was held Monday afternoon in El Cajon to not only celebrate the holiday season, but to also call on local leaders to fully reopen businesses and schools.The “All I Want for Christmas is Freedom” rally took place at the El Cajon Centennial Plaza, located on 200 Civic Center Way.The event was organized by the group Re-Open San Diego and was a “free and safe family event to save the spirit of Christmas, enjoy food, shopping, listening to the Mayor of El Cajon [Bill Wells] play live music, and to advocate for fully reopening San Diego businesses and schools.”State Sen. Brian Jones, Rep. Darrell Issa, and Peggy Hall with TheHealthyAmerican.org will be among those speaking at the rally. Many say they believed businesses can reopen safely."Let these people get back to work and be safe, take care of their employees, take care of their customers and open up in a safe manner," Jones said.
