SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report out Thursday shows that the United States will gain 23 new million cities within the next year, and San Diego didn't shy away from the list. According to Zillow, a million city is defined as a city with a median home value of million or more.It’s no surprise that San Diego has five such cities. Included in the list is Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Coronado, Solana Beach and Encinitas.One of those cities, Encinitas, became a million city within the last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego gym owner said he is keeping his doors open despite state restrictions on indoor operations that took effect early Wednesday morning.For Shawn Gilbert, the owner of Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, keeping his business open is a matter of survival."I took a huge financial hit in May. Money out of my pocket that's never coming back. We have bills to pay, we have rent to pay,” Gilbert told ABC 10News.Gilbert said he believes his gym can operate safely with face covering and social distancing guidelines because it is a large, open space with high ceilings. The gym also has an outdoor space that Gilbert plans to also utilize.According to Gilbert, none of his gym members or employees have tested positive for coronavirus.Gilbert told ABC 10News he’s prepared for any possible citations for staying open."We have a lawyer with six other gyms, all representing us gym owners. What [Gov. Gavin] Newsom did this time is unlawful. I find it criminal,” said Gilbert.Boulevard Fitness is closed Wednesday for cleaning, but the facility will reopen Thursday at 6 a.m. 1111

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A number of drivers who parked their cars in Little Italy this week got a nasty surprise when they tried to leave.Their cars were trapped because other people parked next to them on Beech Street."I can't figure out how the city has made such a mess of this street," said Andrea Silva, who lives downtown. The issue happened because the city restriped one side of the road from Front to Sixth Avenue as part of its downtown mobility plan. The idea is to move the parking spots away from the curbs toward the middle of the street. The area in between the cars and curb would then become a dedicated bike and scooter lane, separated by pillars. The city recently completed those lanes on J Street in the East Village.The problem on Beech Street arose because crews painted the new mid-street parking spots, but didn't add any signage, curb painting or other barriers to alert drivers not to park on the curb. That lead to people parking where they are used to, with others parking next to them in the new spots. "I'd definitely be mad," said John Shores, who was staying downtown. "I couldn't go anywhere until these people decide to move."City spokesman Anthony Santacroce said crews should have the work completed by early next week, with pillars keeping the cars from going up to the curb on Beech Street. He said workers will also put up work zone warning signs to alert drivers to not park on the side of the street. "During the short amount of time between painting of new parking spaces and the construction of the cycle tracks, cars were permitted to park in both the new spaces and the soon-to-be removed spaces along the curb," Santacroce said. "Although we understand that this could lead to some confusion, the intent was not to limit parking until the final phase of construction."The downtown mobility plan, in the first of three phases, connects the East Village to Little Italy, emphasizing alternate methods of transportation. 1967

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local whale watcher captured a rare sight off the coast of San Diego this week.A blue whale and its calf were captured on drone video by photographer Domenic Biagini Wednesday about 12 miles off the coast of Mission Beach.The beautiful sight isn't something many videographers have the chance to see, Biagini told 10News.RELATED: Thar she blows! It’s me and the Our Planet documentary people that have ever captured something like this. That’s about it," he said.The large animals generally follow the path of krill in coastal waters, Biagini said. And an even smaller few to film something as intimate as I just did in what has to be some of the calmest conditions imaginable." 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company created technology for NASA's 2020 Mars rover, launching in July.The Perseverance is set to launch July 20, at 9:15 a.m. EST.NASA's been working on this project for more than a decade, drawing from past missions with hopes of finding evidence of past life on the red planet."It's a really exciting mission!" Mike Carpenter, VP of Engineering at KULR Technology said."We don't know for sure what they're going to find, but if they find any hard evidence of life that would be wonderful." Carpenter is thrilled to be a part of this mission, bringing a piece of San Diego to Mars.Carpenter said the company is known for it's technology that keeps batteries from exploding.For the rover, they created heat sinks that control the temperature around sensitive instruments. Specifically the heat sinks on Perseverance protect SHERLOC, a detector on the arm of the rover that looks for signs of past life.KULR sent similar tech to Mercury, but this is their first trip to Mars."It is the largest most sophisticated rover NASA has sent there," Carpenter said.According to NASA, Perseverance will be landing in the Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient river delta.The mission has four Science Goals:1. Determine whether life ever arose on Mars.2. Characterize the climate on Mars. (Seeking to find if an ancient climate could have supported life.)3. Characterize the geology of Mars.4. Prepare for human exploration."This science goal relates to national space policy for sending humans to Mars in the 2030s." 1547
