SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent cyber-attacks on Southern California school districts has shown a new front in the war against computer criminals. Hackers have started to target schools and school districts for ransomware attacks."What they're looking for, ultimately, is money," says Kierk Sanderlin, the Head of Engineering for Check Point, a cyber-security firm.Sanderlin says the hackers will spend months using malware and fishing campaigns to gain access to computer systems. Then, when the time is right, they'll launch the ransomware attack, shutting down the system and demanding a ransom to restore access."They want to impact the environment in such a negative way, at such a critical time, that you will be willing to pay," says Sanderlin.Over the weekend, the San Bernardino School District had its servers shut down by a ransomware attack. And in August, San Dieguito Schools lost the ability for parents to register their students for classes because of an attack.Sanderlin says there have been 50 similar attacks on schools throughout the country in 2019.Sanderlin says the criminals typically want to make money from the ransom. But, he warns they can also use their access to the systems to steal the personal information of students, teachers and families.If they do that, Sanderlin says they can sell the information on the dark web, making people vulnerable to identity theft."All of that intellectual property, identification for student records, social security numbers, anything they can mine and sell on the dark web, they're going to do that," he says.School districts have become easy targets because many of them don't upgrade their cyber security frequently enough. Sanderlin compares it to fighting a modern war with antique weapons."We have to start treating cyber-security as something that's far more important than we have in the past," he says. "We can't be an ostrich sticking our head in the ground anymore. We have to realize this is important and do it the right way."He says parents need to become advocates for better cyber security, urging districts to invest in upgrades to protect their networks. He also advises people to use dark-web monitoring services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A massive police presence was seen on the border of Clairemont and Bay Park after police received a call about a possible assault with a deadly weapon Monday. According to authorities, the incident happened on the 3300 block of Clairemont Avneue. After investigating, police say there was no assault. A child's grandmother called police saying there had been a shooting.The child's mother also showed up at the scene and told police the grandmother has a mental issue and that there had been no assault.  557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A rash of mail tampering incidents has led to missing money and an unusual M.O.On Winnebago Avenue in late June, Kelly Craig was standing in front of her home talking to a neighbor."Around 10:30 a.m., the mail carrier dropped off the mail in front of me," said Craig.A few minutes later, Craig got her mail and noticed something. One of her envelopes was sliced open on the side. "Looks like a razor blade slit the side," said Craig.Inside, she found a birthday card from her mother, mailed from Montana. The usual money was not there. A call to mom revealed 0 in cash should have been inside."Felt panicked and really sad the money was missing, and my mom was really upset," said Craig.Craig wasn't alone. That same day, less than two miles away, her daughter-in-law went to get her mail."She got a wedding card from my sister, and it had cash in it as well," said Craig.The 0 that was inside was gone. That envelope was also sliced open on the left side, but there was one difference. The side and back of the enveloped were resealed with tape."Clearly trying to cover up their stealing of the money," said Craig.When Craig and her daughter-in-law reported it to postal authorities, they say they were told of similar recent incidents, including one if the College Area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A near decade-long push to get a traffic light installed at a residential intersection along Governor Drive is inching closer to success.The city has partially funded the light at the intersection of Lakewood Street and Governor Dr. and it's now in the design phase. The news comes almost nine years after resident Mark Powell complained to the city about speeding drivers. Powell received a letter from the city in April 2010 that acknowledged a safety issue and said the intersection would be placed on its "priority list" for a traffic light, pending funding. "If you're put on a priority list, and it's been a decade, you're obviously not a priority," Powell said. "They've failed on multiple levels to get this completed."The intersection is on a long stretch of Governor Dr. that leads from Genesee Avenue to the 805. It has a 35 mile-per-hour speed limit, but there is no traffic light or stop sign to slow drivers as they pass Lakewood St. "By copy of this letter we will request that the police department consider this location for radar enforcement," the city said in the 2010 letter. Meanwhile, Powell says the safety issue is getting worse because University City is going through a building boom. The area is seeing new high rises, plus the expansion of the Westfield UTC mall. Powell's daughter, Arielle, 16, just got her driver's license and commutes to University City High School daily, making a left onto Governor from Lakewood. It's the only road that leads out of the neighborhood. "I get nervous in the morning because I don't want to be late for school having to wait for all of these people, because traffic on Genesee builds up really fast," Arielle said.
