SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A new study from the Public Religion Research Institute paints a grim picture of people struggling to make ends meet in San Diego.The study polled more than 3,300 people across the state. It says 45% of San Diegans fall into an auspicious category: people who work full time and still struggle with poverty.The study looked for income levels below 250% of what the US Census Bureau considers the local poverty level. While it doesn't provide an exact dollar amount for that, the study's author says that percentage seemed to be the tipping point for people who could or could not withstand a financial emergency."In this group, a majority of them say they would have a difficult time even coming up with 0 for an emergency expense," says PRRI CEO Robert Jones. "About 4 in 10 say they have put off going to the doctor or cut down on meals to save money. So these are people who are really living right on the edge."At 45%, San Diego falls near the middle of California regions when looking at working people who struggle to make ends meet. On the low end, the Bay Area had just 27% of people in that category. Los Angeles was at 49%. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A ring-tailed lemur that was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo this week has been found.The 21-year-old male lemur named Maki was discovered missing shortly before the zoo opened to visitors on Wednesday. Investigators found evidence of a forced entry to the lemur enclosure.Someone called police Thursday evening to say that Maki was spotted in Daly City, a few miles south of the zoo.Police say the animal was found in the playground area of a church.Maki was found to be in good health and was transported back to the zoo.Detectives are still investigating the break-in.?? SAN DIEGO (KGTV): San Diego State University may require all students to have the Meningitis-B vaccine beginning in the fall of 2019.The University is in preliminary discussions about the idea after an outbreak made three students sick on campus this fall.A university spokesperson confirmed to 10News that the school is in the very early stages of the idea. A statement from the school says it stems from "continued conversations with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency," and that "the safety and wellbeing of all SDSU students remains the priority."The Cal State University system doesn't require the Meningitis-B vaccine. Their guidelines say that schools only need to "inform incoming freshmen living on-campus about the Meningococcal disease and provide information on available vaccines."However, according to SDSU, "The California State University Office of the Chancellor is engaging in the review and consultation process necessary to update the existing policy." The CSU systemwide policy can be found here.This fall's outbreak was the second instance of the disease in the last four years on campus. In 2014, a student died from Meningitis-B.The disease has similar symptoms to a cold or flu. It can be fatal. In other cases, people who get the disease suffer brain damage, hearing loss or the loss of limbs, fingers or toes.During the most recent outbreak, the University supplied antibiotics to students who were in close contact with the ones who'd been infected. The school also held vaccination clinics on campus.Some students had to get a second vaccination after the school discovered that several doses of the vaccine weren't properly stored. Those vaccines were administered by Walgreens, who also was responsible for their storage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in.
